UNI AIDS TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORT

The University community has responded strongly – and on many levels – to the aftermath of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that hit several countries in Asia on Boxing Day.

Institutionally, the University of Melbourne stepped in to offer immediate cash support and also has a strategy in place to support long-term relief to affected countries in the region.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis (pictured right), has expressed his sympathy and pledged assistance for alumni and staff of the University affected by the tsunami disaster.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter McPhee, is heading the University's 'Tsunami Taskforce' which is considering how the University might best contribute to the longer-term rebuilding phase in the affected countries. <more>

ROD QUANTOCK
Comedian, Writer, Director, Producer & Consultant, Political Activist, Melbourne

Rod Quantock has gained much from his degree. He has learned 'how to hurl a wet teabag across the cafeteria in the manner of David (of David and Goliath fame)', and that he'd 'never make an architect.' (And he never did). But he did make it in many other spheres. Dubbed by The Age as a 'living Melbourne treasure', Rod is now a comedian, freelance writer, performer and speaker for the public, non-profit and private sectors. He is also a prominent environmental, social and political activist. <more>
