Welcome to the Alumni Relations Program newsletter. GradNet is published every three weeks and includes University news, research updates and event details.

CHANCELLOR TO VISIT LONDON IN JUNE

The President of the University of Melbourne Alumni in the United Kingdom, Rebecca Hossack, and the UK Alumni Management Committee will host a mid-summer reception in honour of a visit to London by the Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, Ms Fay Marles AM, and Mr Don Marles OAM. The event will be an opportunity for alumni to bid farewell to the Chancellor who will be retiring at the end of 2004.

Details: June 21, 2004, 6.30-8.30pm, the Charlotte Street Hotel, 15-17 Charlotte Street, London W1T 1RJ.

Alumni and staff of the University of Melbourne who will be in London on the day are welcome to attend, even if you are not normally based in the UK and are not a member of the UK alumni network. ALUMNI CAREERS @ MELBOURNE

THAI UNI VISITS FOR PD TRAINING: More than 50 staff from Mahasarakham University, Thailand, visited the University of Melbourne recently for a five-day professional development program devised and run for them by the University's Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE). Read more.

MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR INDONESIAN CONTRACT GOES TO MU PRIVATE:
Melbourne University Private's School of International Development has won a multi-million dollar contract to conduct a major legal reform project in Indonesia. Read more.

APPROACHES TO T&L IN ASIA REVIEWED: The University of Melbourne has adopted an Indigenous Employment Strategy designed to make the University an employer of choice for Indigenous Australians. Read more.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND THE FREE TRADE AGREEMENT:The group of negotiators involved in signing off on the Intellectual Property provision in the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement will speak at a seminar at the University of Melbourne on June 18. Read more.

University Fund 2004 Annual Appeal

At this time of the year, the Chancellor Ms Fay Marles AM invites alumni and supporters to contribute to the University's areas of greatest need by giving to the University Fund annual appeal. Donations made to the University Fund allow the University to provide additional and practical support for our students; add to library resources; contribute to research; or to assist faculties with priority needs. Thank you to those of you who have supported the annual giving program in the past.

If you wish to support the University from abroad, you may be interested in the option of making a gift to The Friends of the University of Melbourne Charitable Trust in the UK, or The University of Melbourne USA Foundation. A gift to either the Trust, or the Foundation, for the benefit of the University of Melbourne may enable you to obtain taxation benefits in the relevant country

The Chancellor Ms Fay Marles AM and Mr Don Marles OAM will be in attendance as guests of honour. Venue: Dewan Tun Dr Ismail, Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur. AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL ALUMNI CONVENTION [AUIAC] 2004

This year's convention will be held in Hong Kong, December 1-3, 2004. All Melbourne alumni are warmly invited to attend. The University will send representatives and is planning to arrange a special function for Melbourne alumni to coincide with the convention. More information.

UNI RESEARCH HELPS KIDS WITH TOURETTE SYNDROME: Harvie Krumpet's compulsion to touch people's noses recently won an Oscar for his creator, Adam Elliot. Now University of Melbourne research has produced an interactive CD-ROM to increase awareness of Harvie's disorder, Tourette Syndrome (TS), among teachers and parents. Read more.

UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE RESEARCH CENTRE DEVELOPS NEW SOLUTIONS TO YOUTH ISSUES: The University of Melbourne's Australian Youth Research Centre (AYRC) is drawing on an evidence base of more than 14 years to develop new, cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral approaches to youth issues. Read more.
