ALUMNI CAREERS @ MELBOURNE
|
Mrs Inga Clendinnen has been awarded the 8th annual Kiriyama Prize for her book exploring the first years of European settlement in New South Wales, "Dancing with Strangers". The Kiriyama Prize is awarded annually in recognition of outstanding books that promote greater understanding of Pacific Rim nations and the South Asian subcontinent.
Inga studied at the University of Melbourne, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts(Hons). She then went on to complete a Masters degree in 1972. Mrs Clendinnen has received numerous awards for her writing. In 1999 she was awarded the New York Times Best Book of the Year for "Reading the Holocaust".
Mrs Clendinnen shares the Kiriyama Prize with novelist Shan Sa who was also awarded for her book "The Girl Who Played Go". The two authors will share equally in the US$30,000 cash award.

MR GRAHAM ELLENDER
This edition, GradNet @ Melbourne profiles Mr Graham Ellender (Master of Dental Science 1975, Doctor of Philosophy 1981) who, after dedicating 20 years of service as an Academic at the University of Melbourne, decided to leave the city for the country to pursue his interest in wine-making. UNIVERSITY ALUM APPOINTED TO NEW MALAYSIAN MINISTRY
Datuk Dr Mustapha bin Mohamed is making a return to the Cabinet after almost five years. He is one of six ministers appointed in the Prime Minister's Department and will be in charge of National Economic Planning. He holds a BA (Hons) and an honorary DCom from The University of Melbourne.
