UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE SCIENTISTS ELECTED TO ROYAL SOCIETY

Two eminent University of Melbourne scientists have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society - the only Australian-based scientists elected this year among 44 Fellows from the fields of science, engineering, technology and medicine.

They are Laureate Professor Emeritus Graeme Clark, Director of the Bionic Ear Institute, and Professor David Solomon, Professorial Fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Read more.

MELBOURNE HAS LOWEST DROPOUT RATE: The University of Melbourne has the lowest student attrition rates of any higher education institution in Australia, according to 2002 figures released recently by the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Education, Science and Training. Read more.

FIVE RECEIVE 2004 U21 AWARDS: The University of Melbourne has awarded 2004 Universitas 21 awards to three academics and two general staff members to support scholarly and professional activities aimed at bringing new gains in areas such as teaching, learning and administration. Read more.

FELTON BEQUEST FUNDS CHAIR OF CHILD AND FAMILY WELFARE: The Alfred Felton Chair of Child and Family Welfare has been established at the University of Melbourne with a major grant from the Felton Bequest. Read more.

Alumni News

WATCH THIS SPACE - CHANGES TO THE ALUMNI WEBSITE

Many of you have told us what you think about the Alumni @ Melbourne website: via the website feedback form, the GradNet subscriber survey, and email. In response to your feedback, we are now redeveloping the website. Over the coming months, you will notice some initial changes. The existing 'Virtual Community' features will be removed and replaced with a better facility by the end of the year. Please refer to the homepage and future editions of GradNet for updates on the website re-development project. If you would like to find out more about this project, or you have any feedback, comments or suggestions, please email the Communications Officer.

OUT NOW - MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE

The Melbourne University Magazine is published in May each year and sent free of charge to all alumni and friends for whom the University of Melbourne has a valid postal address. The 2004 edition was sent to over 142,000 addresses in more than 120 countries. If you did not receive your Melbourne University Magazine 2004, you can request a copy by email or by calling the Development Office on (03) 8344 0882. You can also download a copy of the Melbourne University Magazine 2004 (pdf 1.99 mb).

University Fund 2004 Annual Appeal

At this time of the year, the Chancellor Ms Fay Marles AM invites alumni and supporters to contribute to the University's areas of greatest need by giving to the University Fund annual appeal. Donations made to the University Fund allow the University to provide additional and practical support for our students; add to library resources; contribute to research; or to assist faculties with priority needs.

The Chancellor's invitation to support the 2004 annual appeal and a donation response form are now available.

Chiron - Out Now: the University of Melbourne Medical Society's (UMMS) annual journal Chiron was published in June. Chiron features selected papers from the 2003 Dean's Lecture Series plus articles from and about staff and students in the School of Medicine, 2003 medical graduate lists, alumni reunion events in 2003, obituaries and in depth articles about medical history. The journal is posted to UMMS members in June, complementing the society's biannual newsletter Melbourne PostCard. Membership of UMMS is free and renewable annually. LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL HOUSE HISTORY

CELEBRATING TRINITY WOMEN

Trinity College has been educating women since 1883 and in 2004 marks the 30th anniversary of full co-residence. DEPRESSION, DIABETES LINKAGE TO BE FOCUS OF NEW INVESTIGATION: University of Melbourne research into depression linked with diabetes has been awarded a 2004 beyondblue seed grant worth almost $50,000 by the Victorian Centre of Excellence in Depression and Related Disorders. Read more.

STUDY ASKS HOW CHILDREN BUILD THEIR CULTURAL AND 'RACIAL' IDENTITIES:A University of Melbourne research team will study 48 preschoolers over the next two years in a move to discover more about how young Australians construct their cultural and ‘racial’ identities. Read more.
