Incoming Vice-Chancellor: radical change for Australian universities

Australian universities are on the threshold of radical change as the ‘Dawkins system’ which has governed higher education in Australia since 1988 comes speedily to an end, Vice-Chancellor designate Professor Glyn Davis told a packed public lecture at the University last month.

Delivering the inaugural Melbourne Politics Lecture, “Tiers or tears? The regulation of Australian higher education”, Professor Davis (right) said the Dawkins policy now shapes thinking in the bureaucracy and universities alike. more

At many stages during your career you will want to pause and reassess your directions. You may be moving location, seeking a new position in your own organisation or wanting to try a new industry or occupation. Perhaps you have been headhunted or you may want to take up a position with more responsibility to extend your skills. Maybe you will decide to start your own business or become self employed, or perhaps you are contemplating a scenario where you couple together a number of jobs and undertake some volunteer work. MELBOURNE’S GRANTS SUCCESS CONFIRMS TOP RESEARCH UNIVERSITY POSITION
The University of Melbourne has confirmed its outstanding position as Australia’s leading research university winning more than $83 million in major competitive research funding for 2005. more

MELBOURNE SCHOLARS ELECTED TO AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF HUMANITIES
Five of the 18 scholars recently elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities are University of Melbourne academics. more

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO UNIVERSITY HONOURED
Former Deputy Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, Reverend Norman Curry, and the former Dean of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, now Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, Professor Richard Larkins, were awarded the University’s highest honour recently with the degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa). more

Space bubbles from the cosmic dark ages have provided scientists with the key to the design of a new radio telescope that, by simply tuning to the right frequency, can map the early universe in three dimensions. more

$2.2M TO BOOST SENSOR NETWORK TECHNOLOGY

OLD UNI FRIENDS REUNITE AFTER 50 YEARS
Bill Pugh of Sandringham, Victoria and Foong Weng Yew of Ipoh, Malaysia attended the University of Melbourne together in the 1950s. After 50 years of exchanging Christmas cards and letters, they decided to meet once again outside the Union building to walk around and reminisce. This is the story of their reunion

RESIDENT AND NON-RESIDENT TRINITY SCHOLARSHIPS
Trinity College offers some scholarships to assist graduates of Trinity College Foundation Studies (TCFS) to come into residence at Trinity while studying at the University of Melbourne. Other scholarships cover non-residential fees for outstanding students. Both programs fulfil government visa requirements for responsible supervision of international students under 18 years of age. Applications close 18 January 2005. more

BECOME A COMMERCE ALUMNI SOCIETY MEMBER
The Commerce Alumni Society regularly holds events for members and friends throughout the year. Members are also sent a newsletter featuring Faculty News and upcoming events twice a year. Membership is free. The most recent newsletter was sent in September to recent graduates and members. Should you wish to become a member, please contact Emily Nugent.
