University Recognises Excellence in Teaching and Learning Support

The University of Melbourne has honoured nine outstanding academics in health, education, science, and economics and commerce with awards worth a total of $100,000 for excellence in teaching and support services.

Four are recipients of 2004 University of Melbourne Awards for Excellence in Teaching and five share the University’s inaugural Award for Innovation and Excellence in Support of and Service to Teaching and Learning.

UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE STUDENTS ON THE JOB AT 3RRR
University of Melbourne software engineering students are working with community radio station 3RRR to create a cutting edge program to handle a sponsorship scheduling system. Read more.

INAUGURAL REDMOND BARRY FELLOWSHIP
The inaugural Redmond Barry Fellowship has been awarded to Melbourne historian Dr Leonarda Kovacic, who will use it to fund research into the way Aboriginal women were represented in photography during the colonial period of Australian history. Read more.

$100M TO BOOST ORAL HEALTH RESEARCH
A University of Melbourne-led alliance between academia and industry will see an investment of more than $100 million for oral health research in Australia. Read more.

EDUCATION BUILDS BRIDGE TO BRUNEI
Brunei Darussalam’s Deputy Education Minister was an honoured visitor to the University of Melbourne recently, meeting with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwong Lee Dow, and Vice-Principal (University Development), Mr Roger Peacock, to discuss educational opportunities in Australia for Brunei nationals. ARTS

Join the School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology for an exciting weekend of Byzantine scholarship. Byzantine Narratives, a conference in honour of Associate Professor Roger Scott, in association with the Australian Association of Byzantine Studies will be opened by the Dean of the Faculty Arts, Professor Stuart Macintyre on Friday 13th August, 6pm in the Prince Philip Theatre, Architecture and Planning Building, University of Melbourne. The evening will include a public lecture presented by international Byzantine scholar Professor Margaret Mullett (The Queen's University of Belfast) and a performance by the Australian Byzantine Choir and Varangian Guard.     LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL HOUSE HISTORY

    CELEBRATING TRINITY WOMEN

    Sunday October 24: Trinity College has been educating women since 1883 and in 2004 marks the 30th anniversary of full co-residence. A special lunch at the College for all alumni and their partners, will celebrate women at Trinity, their achievements, and the College's commitment to gender equality. More information.

    TRINITY HONOURS SINGAPORE MEDICAL PIONEER

    Trinity alumna Dr Susan Lim performed Asia's first successful liver transplant, has pioneered robotic surgery, and is leading research into the use of adult stem cells in search of a cure for diabetes. Now she has been elected a Fellow of Trinity College - the highest honour the College can bestow. More information.
