University Recognises Excellence in Teaching and Learning Support

The University of Melbourne has honoured nine outstanding academics in health, education, science, and economics and commerce with awards worth a total of $100,000 for excellence in teaching and support services.

Four are recipients of 2004 University of Melbourne Awards for Excellence in Teaching and five share the University’s inaugural Award for Innovation and Excellence in Support of and Service to Teaching and Learning.

University News

ENGINEERING HISTORY COMING SOON
The Faculty of Engineering's history, Increasing Momentum: Engineering at the University of Melbourne 1861-2004 by Carolyn Rasmussen (Melbourne University Publishing), will be available from November 2004. Cost: $65.00. Special price of $60.00 (plus post and packing) if an order is received by 11th November 2004. INAUGURAL REDMOND BARRY FELLOWSHIP
The inaugural Redmond Barry Fellowship has been awarded to Melbourne historian Dr Leonarda Kovacic, who will use it to fund research into the way Aboriginal women were represented in photography during the colonial period of Australian history. Read more.

PRIVATE UNIVERSITY EXPORTS AUSTRALIAN PPP EXPERTISE
Australian experience in public private partnership (PPP) projects brought a Hong Kong government delegation to Melbourne recently for a five-day study program organised by Melbourne University Private and Minter Ellison. Read more.

$100M TO BOOST ORAL HEALTH RESEARCH
A University of Melbourne-led alliance between academia and industry will see an investment of more than $100 million for oral health research in Australia. Read more.

EDUCATION BUILDS BRIDGE TO BRUNEI
Brunei Darussalam’s Deputy Education Minister was an honoured visitor to the University of Melbourne recently, meeting with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwong Lee Dow, and Vice-Principal (University Development), Mr Roger Peacock, to discuss educational opportunities in Australia for Brunei nationals. At this time of the year, the Chancellor Ms Fay Marles AM invites alumni and supporters to contribute to the University's areas of greatest need by giving to the University Fund annual appeal. If you wish to support the University from abroad, you may be interested in the option of making a gift to The Friends of the University of Melbourne Charitable Trust in the UK, or The University of Melbourne USA Foundation. A gift to either the Trust, or the Foundation, for the benefit of the University of Melbourne may enable you to obtain taxation benefits in the relevant country. More information (pdf, 139 kb).

This year's convention will be held in Hong Kong, December 1-3, 2004. All Melbourne alumni are warmly invited to attend. The University will send representatives and is planning to arrange a special function for Melbourne alumni to coincide with the convention. More information.
