Students Thinking Pink for Very Special Kids

A group of students from the University of Melbourne’s Student Ambassador Leadership Program (SALP) has developed a project called Operation: Think Pink to help raise funds for charitable organisation Very Special Kids.

The University’s SALP provides students with an opportunity to work voluntarily for a non-profit organisation, or create their own projects to address the needs of a particular community group. The aim of the program is to develop students’ leadership and team skills, and includes other activities such as public speaking, facilitating host and discussion groups, and liaising with University staff and students. more

As a Development Consultant for the United Nations Development Program, Joseph has worked on projects in areas such as Syria, Iran, Pakistan, Cambodia and Malaysia. THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE ALUMNI BUSHWALKING GROUP
This bushwalking group is a non-profit organisation for alumni of all ages and from all backgrounds who wish to enjoy the Australian bush. A few experienced bushwalking leaders share the responsibility of leading monthly walks. Everyone is welcome, including friends and family. The next walk takes place on October 16 at Ada Tramway. Eat My Words: The second of this monthly literary series will feature Australian novelist and University of Melbourne graduate M J Hyland, whose debut novel How The Light Gets In was nominated for the prestigious Age Book of the Year Award. M J Hyland will be speaking on the topic 'The Truth and Nothing But'. Hosted by poet and critic Emeritus Professor Chris Wallace-Crabbe, this will be an opportunity for current and past students of the University to chat with a prominent literary identity in a casual atmosphere over afternoon tea. ECONOMICS AND COMMERCE (E&C)
The Faculty is delighted to announce the appointment of a Nobel Laureate as Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. The appointments are made under the University's Eminent Scholars Program and will commence in 2005. Sir James Mirrlees, Professor of Political Economy, University of Cambridge will spend up to two months each year for the next three years at the University where he will carry out collaborative research, give lectures and advise young researchers.

Become a Commerce Alumni member: The Commerce Alumni Society regularly holds events for members and friends throughout the year. Members are also sent a newsletter featuring Faculty News and upcoming events twice a year. Membership is free. The most recent newsletter was sent in September to recent graduates and members. MELBOURNE BUSINESS SCHOOL (MBS)
Joshua Gans and Stephen King have published a new book entitled Finishing the Job: Real-world Policy Solutions in Health, Housing, Education and Transport, 2004: Melbourne University Press. Medicare and hospital costs, housing, education and transport are the big issues of the day for many Australians. In this new book, the authors outline a new approach to the major economic issues facing all Australian consumers and suggest more logical roles for government expenditure and intervention. more

MUSIC
In recent years, the Faculty of Music has been increasingly focused on career placements for its music students. In Bmus 2nd year, students undertake a subject called 'Careers in Music', in which a series of graduates from all kinds of music related work speak about how they have made their careers. The Music Placement Office is developing agreements with 50 employers to provide work experience places for students in their 4th year. Already agreed are placements in fields such as concert management, music retail, sound recording, music instrument making and repair, and music education.
