Reflecting on milestones of 2008 at UMAAS AGM

The University of Melbourne Alumni Association Shanghai (UMAAS) 2008 Annual General Meeting was held on 9 December.

Outgoing UMAAS President Benjamin Liu (JD 2006) presented a strong report on the year’s achievements. With both professional and social events held through out the year, UMAAS has successfully drew participation from more than 150 alumni and guests in 2008, and set up cooperative relationships with RMIT Alumni Association and CPA Australia.

In line with the objective of UMAAS, serving as the tie between University of Melbourne and alumni in Shanghai, the 2008 UMAAS AGM invited Dr Thomas Juan (BE/BSc 2003, PhD 2008) to make a speech on the University of Melbourne's new Melbourne Model, which attracted wide interest from alumni in attendance.

The AGM was concluded with the 2009 UMAAS Committee being formed with Mr Nick Yan as the official ballot controller residing over the process.

The new committee will be headed by Richard Hong (BSc/BCom 1999, BIS 2003) as President and Tracey Tao (MEd 2002) as Vice-President. Six new members will join the committee.

The 2009 UMAAS Committee will continue to uphold the mission of UMAAS, and work closely with University of Melbourne to provide high quality events to alumni in Shanghai. More relaxing social events and interest group activities are under consideration. 2009 UMAAS Committee warmly welcomes Melbourne University alumni to actively participate the future events.

A friendly exchange between Melbourne and China

President Rao Zihe and Vice Chancellor Glynn Davis

A NEW student exchange program between China’s prestigious Nankai University and the University of Melbourne was recently announced at a University alumni event in Beijing.

Nankai University President Rao Zihe (PhD MDHS 1991), a Melbourne alumnus, and Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Glynn Davis entered a new exchange agreement on 13 October, as they met in China to renew an existing bilateral agreement.
The strong relationship between the two universities dates back to 1984, when Nankai became Melbourne’s first academic partner in the People’s Republic of China.

President Rao has also recently agreed to become patron of Melbourne’s Beijing Alumni Association.
The celebrated medical alumnus has won a number of awards for his research into SARS, including the Trieste Science Prize. He previously served as Professor of Structural Biology and Vice-Dean of Medicine at Tsinghua University. From 2003 to April 2007, he served as Director-General of the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the National Laboratory of Biomacromolecules.

More than 175 alumni and their guests attended the Bejing alumni event, which provided them with an opportunity to meet over 30 representatives from local and international companies to discuss professional opportunities. A second similar event in Shanghai attracted over 80 alumni and 30 corporate representatives.
