WA's 'Most Inspiring Man of 2008' keynote speaker at Perth alumni event
A VET SCIENCE alumnus named 'WA's Most Inspiring Man of the Year' in 2008 presented an engaging keynote speech at a Perth alumni event, held at the The Art Gallery of Western Australia on 21st May 2009.
Dr Peter Symons (BVSc 1979) has overcome many personal battles to start the Positive Workplace Foundation, visiting workplaces to share the powerful story of his fight against suicidal depression, how he overcame it, and the new theory he helped develop to explain it.
Dr Symons joined forces with Dr Clyde Jumeaux, a doctor in general practice, to develop a new theory on depression called ‘Brain Fuel Depletion’. According to the Brain Fuel Depletion model, the excessive stress of modern lifestyles can deplete a person’s neurotransmitters (or ‘Brain Fuels’), which explains the psychological symptoms of depression. Adrenaline (the body’s natural ‘fight or flight’ hormone) kicks in, causing a range of distressing symptoms including anxiety and insomnia.
This event at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on Thursday 21 May gave alumni the chance to catch up over wine and canapes, and experience an exclusive viewing of two of the exhibitions: Larrakitj and Yirrakala, by artists of North East Arnhem Land.
Date: Thursday 21 May 2009
Time: 6:00 - 9:00pm
Location: The Art Gallery of Western Australia
