Liz Sonenberg was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Collaboration) at the University of Melbourne in August 2009. She is also Professor of Information Systems in the Faculty of Science. In her Pro Vice-Chancellor role she supports the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and holds specific responsibilities for research infrastructure and for ensuring the effective operation of the University's cross-disciplinary research Institutes.
Professor Sonenberg's research expertise is in computational science. The integrating theme of her research is the conceptualisation and construction of adaptive, distributed, intelligent information systems. Particular interests include automation with regard to collaboration and teamwork, technologies for personalisation, and automated negotiation. A complementary aspect of the research is the design of the human-machine interface and consequent implications for the development of computational mechanisms to support decision-making in complex settings.

Professor Sonenberg has a strong background in facilitating and engaging in collaborative research, including personal research engagement with colleagues in Psychology, Computer Science, Education, and Medicine, and with colleagues in the Netherlands for over a decade. Additionally, over many years she has developed research links with various industry partners.

Professor Sonenberg has held a number of senior roles at the University of Melbourne, including seven years as a departmental head and a period as Dean of the Faculty of Science.
