Mr Chris Penman
Chris Penman joined the University in August 2003 in the position of Vice-Principal and General Counsel, reporting to the Vice-Chancellor and Senior Vice-Principal. Mr Penman is the senior legal officer in the University and the chief source of legal and related compliance and risk management advice, both in relation to the development of University policies and legislation and also in transactional and case specific situations. He has direct line management and responsibility for the Legal Services and Compliance Offices. He is a member of, or attendee at the meetings of a number of University committees and reports to Council at its meetings on material legal and compliance issues. Mr Penman is responsible for legal advice and management of a wide range of issues in which the University is involved at any time, and generally for protecting the University's legal rights and ensuring that it is able to demonstrate high levels of governance and legislative compliance. Mr Penman was for more than 20 years a partner in a major international law firm, having worked in Melbourne and in several other locations in Australia and overseas. He has served on the Council of the Law Institute of Victoria and several of its committees, and has also been involved in committee work for a number of business and charitable organisations.
