Professor Warren Bebbington
Professor Warren Bebbington is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Relations) and also Professor of Music. He was Head then Dean of the Faculty of Music from 1991-2005. Professor Bebbington is a graduate of the University of Melbourne BMus (1974) and MMus (1978), of Queens College, New York MA (1977), and of the Graduate School, City University of New York MPhil (1979) and PhD (1983). He was a Fulbright Scholar and the University of Melbourne’s first Welsford Smithers Scholar (1975-76). Winner of the 2005 University of Melbourne Award for Excellence in Teaching (Barbara Falk Award for the Humanities), he has had a distinguished teaching career at the Universities of Melbourne and Queensland (where he was Professor and Dean of Music) and at the Australian National University School of Music. Professor Bebbington’s publications include the Oxford Companion to Australian Music, the Dictionary of Australian Music (Oxford Univ.Press), editions of works by Haydn (Barenreiter) and Graun (Garland, New York), and he was for some years music member of the International Board of Advisers for Encyclopaedia Britannica. As a conductor he appeared with opera companies, youth orchestras and choirs around Australia, including conducting two national intervarsity choral festivals. Professor Bebbington has served in leading roles on the boards of several national cultural and community organizations, including the Australia Council (chair of music committees for 7 years), Youth Music Australia (deputy chair), and the Australian Music Examinations Board (chair).
