Governance
The University of Melbourne is accountable to all its stakeholders for the values it upholds, the mission it pursues and the goals and priorities it sets.
It must also account for the quality of its policies, programs and academic performance, as well as for the financial well-being of the institution as a whole, and for maintaining the highest levels of probity in the conduct of its affairs.
The University's governance structure ensures these standards are met.
The University Council is the peak governing body of the University. The What Happened at Council page summarises recent discussions and decisions by this group.
The Academic Board oversees the learning, teaching and research activities of the University.
The Planning and Budget Committee (internal web site) is a joint committee, merging the responsibilities of academic and executive management. PBC provides appropriate policy advice and strategic analysis to the Academic Board, to the Vice-Chancellor and to Council.
In 2006-07 the Interim Board of Undergraduate Studies is responsible for ensuring that the Melbourne Model -- an entirely new undergraduate curriculum -- is successfully introduced for students commencing in 2008. The Board of Undergraduate Studies and the New Generation Course Standing Committees (internal web site, email login required) are particularly interested in creating new bachelor degree programs that are of the highest quality.
The members of the University community include academic and professional staff, honorary staff and graduates. The University Calendar is the source for information about the Melbourne University Act 1958 (Victoria), the statutes and regulations that govern our activities, descriptions of our committees and organisational units, and a list of all honorary doctorates awarded by the University. (The University Calendar is different from the Events calendar, which lists public lectures and other events happening on campus each day.)
The list of principal dates includes committee meetings, semesters and terms, conferring ceremonies and other important administrative dates.
The Committee of Convocation represents the interests of Melbourne graduates (alumni) and contributes to policy development at the University. Convocation members participate regularly in faculty committees and other relevant decision-making bodies.
