About the University

Ian Andrew Renard BA Melb. LLM Melb.

Mr Ian Renard became Chancellor of the University of Melbourne on 1 January 2005, having been elected to the position by the 21-member University of Melbourne Council.

A Deputy Chancellor since January 2001, Mr Renard was first elected to the University Council in 1994 as a representative of the graduates and later served as one of six members appointed by the Council.

He is Chairman of the University's Remuneration & Employment Conditions Committee, Nominations and Governance Committee and Honours Committee.

As Chancellor, Mr Renard chairs the University Council meetings, presides at the University's graduation ceremonies and represents the University, as necessary. An important focus for Mr Renard is working with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, to ensure that the teaching and learning experience for all students at Melbourne is stimulating and invigorating, that our research is of world-class standard, and that this is the university in Australia where first-class staff most want to work.

While an Arts and Law student at Melbourne Mr Renard was a resident at Ormond College and later a resident tutor in Law at both Ormond College and Newman College. He shared the Supreme Court Prize in 1969 and obtained a Master of Laws in 1972. As a student, he was active in student affairs and served as Clubs and Societies Officer and as Chair of the Union Council.

In 2001, he resigned as a partner of Melbourne law firm Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks, where he had been a partner in commercial law for 22 years and managing partner from 1989 to 1991. He is currently a director of a number of public companies.

Mr Renard is a Trustee of the R E Ross Trust and co-author of the legal text Takeovers and Reconstructions in Australia. Past community activities have included serving as President of the Library Board of Victoria, Chair of the Melbourne Theatre Company, Treasurer of the Free Kindergarten Association, a member of the Board of Management of the Royal Children's Hospital and a Trustee of the Queen's Fund.

Mr Renard's wife, Diana, is also a graduate of the University of Melbourne, and all four of their daughters are currently studying at university or have just completed degree courses, two of them at Melbourne.
