Recitals -
- By section 18(3) of the Melbourne University Act 1958 power is conferred on the University to make and alter statutes for the affiliation with the University of any commercial, cultural, educational, sporting or other institution or body if-
- the affiliation would assist in attaining any of the objects of the University; and
- the governing body of the institution, organisation or body has consented to the affiliation.
- The Institute of Postcolonial Studies Limited (‘the Institute’)was incorporated under the provisions of the former Corporations Law of Victoria on 29 May 1996 as a company limited by guarantee and its objects as defined in its memorandum of association include the following-
- To initiate, encourage, promote, develop and advance learning and education in postcolonial studies.
- To promote, encourage, develop, introduce, maintain and administer research, both theoretical and applied, in postcolonial studies.
- To receive and disseminate intellectual exchange in postcolonial studies.
- To co-operate, link, affiliate or otherwise reach agreement with other institutions and/or bodies both within and without Australia, with similar or related objects.
- To arrange for the publication of monographs, articles, international journals and/or any other publications in whatsoever format related to the study of postcolonial concerns, societies and studies.
- To promote awareness at large of postcolonial issues and to contribute to public debate regarding same.
- To undertake, carry on and conduct activities and functions of each and every kind that are educational in the widest sense of that expression or are ancillary or related to the study of postcolonial studies.
- To carry on and conduct lectures, seminars, courses and other forms of instruction and discussion on any aspect of the objects of the Institute.
- By an agreement dated 24 September 2003, the University and the Institute have agreed to the affiliation of the Institute to the University.
- The Institute has consented to the provisions of this statute.
Affiliation of the Institute-
9.50.1 (1) The Institute is an educational establishment affiliated to the University for the purposes of promoting-
- the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University and providing facilities therefor;
- and encouraging appropriate research amongst students and providing facilities therefor;
- a co-operative effort between staff of the Institute and University staff towards teaching by the University and research in areas of common interest; and
- and encouraging appropriate research between members of staff of the Institute and members of staff of the University and providing facilities therefor.
(2) Nothing in this statute requires the University to bear any part of the cost of the provision of facilities for teaching or research work at any of the Institute’s premises.
(3) This affiliation ceases on the termination of the Agreement referred to in recital 3.
