Statute 9.48 - Bureau of Meteorology

Recitals -

  1. By sub-section 18(3) of the Melbourne University Act 1958 power is conferred on the University to make and alter statutes for the affiliation with the University of any commercial, cultural, educational, sporting or other institution or body if-
    1. the affiliation would assist in attaining any of the objects of the University; and
    2. the governing body of the institution, organisation or body has consented to the affiliation.
  2. Pursuant to the provisions of the Meteorology Act 1995 of the Commonwealth there is established a Bureau of Meteorology ("the Bureau") the functions of which include-
    1. The promotion of the advancement of meteorological science, by means of meteorological research and investigation or otherwise;
    2. The supply of meteorological information.
  3. The Bureau and the University have agreed to the affiliation of the Bureau to the University in accordance with an Agreement which is to be in the form of the draft Affiliation Agreement approved by the Council at its meeting on 6 September 1999.
  4. The Bureau has consented to the provisions of this statute.

Affiliation of the Bureau-

9.48.1 (1) The Bureau and the University desire that the Bureau and the University be affiliated for the purposes of -

  1. promoting and assisting the teaching and supervision of students of the University and providing facilities therefor;
  2. promoting and encouraging appropriate research among such students and providing facilities therefor;
  3. promoting a co-operative effort between members of staff of the Bureau and members of staff of the University towards teaching by the University and research in areas of common interest; and
  4. promoting and encouraging appropriate research between members of staff of the Bureau and members of staff of the University and providing facilities therefor.

(2) Nothing in this statute requires the University to bear any part of the cost of the provision of facilities for teaching or research work at the Bureau's premises.

(3) This affiliation ceases on the termination of the Agreement or any renewal thereof referred to in recital 3.
