Recitals
- By section 17 of the Melbourne University Act1958 power is conferred on the University to make and alter statutes for the recognition of institutions and bodies at which work is undertaken by students of the University to satisfy the degree requirements of the University or at which research is or may be undertaken by teaching or research staff of the University.
- Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ("CSIRO") is a bodycorporate established pursuant to the Science and Industries Research Act1949 and its objects include the following-
- the initiation and carrying out of scientific researches and investigations in connection with, or for the promotion of, primary or secondary industries in the Commonwealth or in any Territory or in connection with any other matter referred to it by the Minister;
- the training of scientific research workers and the establishment and awarding of scientific research studentships and fellowships;
- the collection and dissemination of information relating to scientific and technical matters; and
- the publication of scientific and technical reports, periodicals and papers.
- CSIRO through its Division of Mineral and Processing Engineering ("the Division") conducts research and instructs persons in the acquisition of knowledge in the areas in which it conducts research.
- By an agreement dated 27 November 1991 CSIRO and the University have agreed that, subject to the statutes and regulations of the University, work undertaken by students of the University at the Division may be recognised by the University for the purposes of satisfying the degree requirements of the University for those students.
- CSIRO has consented to the provisions of this statute.
Recognition of CSIRO
9.35.1 (1) CSIRO is an institution recognised by the University (subject to the University's statutes and resolutions) for the purposes of-
- recognition of work undertaken by students of the University at the Division to satisfy the degree requirements of the University for those students; and
- being an institution at which research is or may be undertaken by teaching or research staff of the University.
(2) Nothing in this statute requires the University to bear any part of the cost of the provision of facilities for teaching or research work at the Division.
(3) This recognition ceases on the termination of the agreement referred to in recital 4.
