Statute 9.15 - Leo Cussen Institute for Continuing Legal Education

Recitals

  1. By section 18 of the Melbourne University Act1958 power is conferred on the University to make and alter statutes for the affiliation to or connection with the University of any college or educational establishment subject to certain conditions set out in that section.
  2. The Leo Cussen Institute ("the Institute") was established as a body corporate under the Leo Cussen Institute for Continuing Legal Education Act1972 to carry out various objects, one of which is to conduct in Victoria courses of training in law.
  3. The Institute conducts courses of practical training in law for graduates in law for the purpose of qualifying them for admission to practise as barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court of Victoria under the rules of the Council of Legal Education.
  4. By an agreement made on 20 February 1976 between the Institute and the University, the University agreed to the affiliation of the Institute to the University.
  5. The Institute has consented to the provisions of this statute.

Affiliation of the Leo Cussen Institute

9.15.1 (1) The Institute is an educational establishment affiliated to the University for the purpose of providing practical training in law for graduates in law in order to enable them to qualify for admission to practise as barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court of Victoria under the rules of the Council of Legal Education.

(2) Nothing in this statute requires the University to bear any part of the cost of the provision of that practical training whether or not provided in the premises of the University or with the use of University facilities and staff but money made available to the University expressly for the purpose of the provision of that training by the Institute for graduates in Law must be paid to the Institute.

(3) This affiliation ceases on the termination for any reason of the agreement referred to in recital 4.
