Council to establish academic departments
6.1.1
- Subject to sub-section (2), the Council may by regulation establish academic departments for the purpose of organising the academic activities of the University.
- Before establishing a department, the Council must consult with the Board and the faculty to which the proposed department will belong.
Heads of departments
6.1.2
- Following receipt of advice from the appropriate faculty, the vice-chancellor must appoint a senior member of staff to be head of department for each department.
- The head of a department is the executive officer of the department.
Deputy heads of departments
6.1.3
- The vice-chancellor may appoint a member of staff to be deputy head of department to assist the head of a department.
- Subject to section 6.1.4, if the head of department or acting head of department is absent or unable to act, the deputy head of department must act as head of the department
Acting heads of departments
6.1.4
- The vice-chancellor may appoint an acting head of a department from the staff members eligible to be appointed head of the department.
- The acting head of a department must act in the place of the head of the department during any absence of the head of department from the University-
- for a period of one month or longer; or
- for a period of less than one month, if a deputy head of the department has not been appointed under section 6.1.3 or if the deputy head of the department is absent or unable to act.
Responsibilities of departments
6.1.5 Subject to the statutes, and after consultation with the Board and the appropriate faculty, the Council must determine by regulation-
- the responsibilities of each department; and
- the responsibilities of the head of each department and the staff of each department.
Establishment of schools
6.1.6
- The Board, after consultation with the faculties and departments concerned, must advise the Council in all matters relating to the establishment of schools.
- On the advice of the Board, the Council may by regulation establish schools, which regulations must-
- define the academic and administrative structures of the school;
- define the relationship between the school and its constituent parts;
- provide for the appointment of a head of the school; and
- define the powers and responsibilities of the head of the school with respect to the school and its constituent parts.
Acting heads of schools
6.1.7 The provisions of section 6.1.4 relating to acting heads of departments apply to schools, the necessary changes being made
Faculties with one department
6.1.8 Notwithstanding any other provision of this statute, if a faculty has only one department or if a school pertains only to a faculty which has one department and no other school, the dean of the faculty is the head of the department or school and the deputy dean of the faculty is the deputy head of the department or school.
Centres for research and research training
6.1.9 In addition to any powers of Council, the vice-chancellor may also make regulations specifying centres for research and research training.
Graduate schools
6.1.10 The provisions of this Statute apply to graduate schools in the manner specified in Statute 5.1.
