Statute 2.3 - The Chancellor and Deputy-Chancellors

Appointment of the Chancellor

2.3.1 1 Council must appoint a Chancellor for a period of three years commencing on 1  January of the year following the year in which Council resolves to make that appointment.
  2 Council may, by standing resolution, provide electoral or other procedures for determining a nominee for appointment as Chancellor.
  3 Subject to the Act, the Chancellor is eligible for reappointment by Council
  4 If the person appointed as the Chancellor ceases to hold office before expiry of the period of his or her appointment, Council may appoint another person to hold that office until it is filled in accordance with sub-section (1).
  5 The office of Chancellor becomes vacant under sub-section (4) if Council, by a majority of two-thirds of all members, so resolves, or as otherwise provided in the Act.

Powers of the Chancellor

2.3.2 Subject to the Act and the statutes, the Chancellor, by virtue of the office, is a member of all bodies of the University.

Appointment of deputy chancellors

2.3.3 1 In each odd-numbered year, Council must appoint one deputy chancellor for a period of two years commencing on 1 January of the year following the year in which Council resolves to make that appointment.
  2 In each even-numbered year, Council must appoint one deputy chancellor for a period of two years commencing on 1 January of the year following the year in which Council resolves to make that appointment.
  3 The provisions of section 2.3.1 of this statute regarding the appointment, reappointment and termination of appointment of the Chancellor extend and apply mutatis mutandis to the deputy chancellors.

Acting Chancellor

2.3.4 1 Council may nominate which deputy chancellor is to undertake the role of acting Chancellor when required.
  2 Subject to section 25 of the Act, in the absence of the Chancellor, or during any vacancy in the office of Chancellor or during the inability of the Chancellor to act, an acting Chancellor has all the powers and duties of the Chancellor.
