Statute 10.2 - Prizes, Exhibitions, Scholarships and Bursaries

Eligibility for prizes etc.

10.2.1 Subject to any other statute or regulation a prize, exhibition or scholarship may be awarded only to a person who has been placed in the class list for the subject and who-

  1. has not previously been awarded that prize, exhibition or scholarship;
  2. has not previously competed for that prize, exhibition or scholarship;
  3. is enrolled in a course for a degree or diploma; and
  4. if a course is divided into Years, has-
    1. completed or received credit for the previous Year;
    2. has fulfilled in one year all the requirements for the relevant Year;
    3. has completed in the year of competition all the subjects of the Year; and
    4. has not been awarded in any subject of the Year a supplementary assessment otherwise than under section 6 of Statute 12.4.

Other conditions for award of prizes etc.

10.2.2 (1) If no student or applicant is considered worthy of the award of a particular prize, exhibition, scholarship or bursary, the award is not be made.

  1. If a subject is common to two or more courses, only one prize, exhibition or scholarship (as the case may be) is to be awarded for that subject, unless otherwise provided in any statute or regulation.
  2. Unless otherwise provided by statute or regulation, if one prize, exhibition or scholarship is to be awarded for any course or subject, the prize, exhibition or scholarship is to be awarded to one student.
  3. The expression ‘net annual income’ in connection with a fund provided for in any regulation made under this statute means the annual income of that fund less any deductions allowable under the terms of the trust or gift which created the fund. It does not include any increases in the capital of the fund.

Deposit of thesis or work in the Library

10.2.3 If a prize, exhibition or scholarship is awarded in respect of a thesis or other work of a similar kind, the academic registrar must deposit a copy of the thesis or work in the Library.

Surplus income from funds

10.2.4 Subject to any statute or regulation or the terms of any gift, any surplus income from any fund relating to any prize, exhibition, scholarship or bursary is to be added to the fund but must remain available to be treated as income in any subsequent year as the Council thinks fit.

Shortfall in annual income from funds

10.2.5 If, in any year, the income of any fund is insufficient to provide the full amount prescribed by regulation for any prize, exhibition, scholarship or bursary, then, subject to the terms of the gift, the amount of the prize, exhibition, scholarship or bursary for that year may be reduced to an amount the Council thinks fit.

Award of scholarships or bursaries

10.2.6 Subject to any statute or regulation, scholarships and bursaries are to be awarded-

  1. as they become vacant, by the Students Loan Fund and Bursaries Committee; and
  2. are to be paid annually from the date awarded.

Changes to awards of prizes etc. 1

10.2.7 Subject to any statute and to the terms of any gift, the Council, by regulation, may amend the terms and conditions of award of the prize, exhibition, scholarship or bursary.

  1. The power to amend does not extend to altering the terms upon which a donor has made a gift, but may be used to alter the administrative machinery established by the Council to implement the gift.
