Regulation 8.1.R4 - International House

Establishment
- International House is established as a place of residence, education and corporate life for students and for the purpose of encouraging international understanding and friendship among students.
Management of International House
- (1) The control and management of International House is to be exercised on behalf of the Council by the council of International House.
(2) Subject to any direction by the Council, the council of International House may determine the number of students from tertiary institutions other than the University who may be accepted in any year.
The head of college
- (1) The Council may, on the recommendation of the council of International House, appoint a head of college of International House.
(2) The head of college is the chief executive officer of International House and, subject to the direction of the council of International House, must manage and be responsible for its affairs.
(3) In addition to any powers of discipline conferred by any statute, the head of college may exercise any powers necessary for, or incidental to, performing the responsibilities of the head of college’s office.
The council of International House
- (1) The council of International House consists of-
- the vice-chancellor, a deputy vice-chancellor nominated by the vice-chancellor and the head of college;
- a member of the Committee of the Friends of International House appointed by that committee;
- the president of the International House Students Club who is elected annually by the Students Club;
- three members appointed by the Council; and
- a member representing commercial and professional interests.
(2) The council of International House as constituted under section 4(1) may co-opt one additional member, who must be a graduate of the University and a former resident of International House, up to two former residents now resident overseas1 and up to two additional members.
(3) Each member of the council of International House, other than a member referred to in paragraphs (a), (b) or (c) of section 4(1) or a co-opted member, or a person appointed to fill a casual vacancy, holds office for three years and is eligible for re-appointment provided that no member is to hold office for more than six years.
(4) A member co-opted by the council of International House under section 4(2) holds office for one year.
(5) A person appointed to fill a casual vacancy on the council of International House is entitled to hold office for the remainder of the term of the member whose office has been filled.
Chairperson and vice-chairperson
- The council of International House may appoint from its own members a chairperson and vice-chairperson each of whom may hold office for no longer than eight years.
Meetings
- (1) The council of International House must meet at least four times each year and, after every meeting, must provide to the Council the minutes of the meeting.
(2) Subject to the statutes and any resolution of the Council, the council of International House may regulate its own procedure.
Committees
- (1) The council of International House may establish such committees it considers necessary for the good management of International House.
(2) Subject to section 7(3), members and non-members of the council of International House may be represented on any committee established under section 7(1).
(3) The council of International House must appoint a chairperson of any committee established under this section from amongst its members and any chairperson so appointed holds office for no longer than six years.
Staff
- The council of International House may engage such staff as it considers necessary.

1 The three members who reside overseas are not expected to attend council meetings regularly but their advice will be sought on various issues as appropriate.
