Establishment
- There is a department within the University known as Melbourne University Bookshops.
Interpretation
- In this regulation-
The Melbourne University Bookshops are referred to as ‘the bookshop’
Objectives
- The objectives of the bookshop are-
- To work closely with departments to supply students with teaching and text materials to meet course and research requirements at affordable prices.
- To actively source information globally to provide support material for researchers, including the latest scholarly monographs and trade titles for academics and the wider community.
- To seek out opportunities for e-commerce including electronic publishing, publishing on demand and digital delivery.
- To maintain a high quality campus bookstore website and provide new services electronically as they evolve.
- To provide an efficient and courteous service and procure a wide range of ancillary goods and services appropriate to a campus-based business for retailing to its customers from the University and wider community.
- To exploit synergies with Melbourne University Publishing Limited to ensure that the University and its staff receive adequate commercial reward for their intellectual property.
- To operate on a commercial basis and return a profit to the University
Board of management

Council must establish a board of management of the bookshop comprising-
- up to three persons with relevant industry experience appointed by Council, one of whom is to be chairperson;
- two persons with appropriate expertise appointed by the President of the Board;
- the vice-chancellor or nominee;
- the chief financial officer of the University; and
- the chief executive officer of the bookshop;

The quorum for a meeting of the board of management is four members.

Chief Executive Officer

Council must appoint a chief executive officer who will manage the bookshop subject to the direction of the board of management. |

Notwithstanding section 8 below, the chief executive officer may, with the consent of the board of management, engage any persons whose services may be required for the purposes of the bookshop |
Powers and duties of the board of management
- The board of management must-
- meet at least four times in each year and more frequently if considered necessary by the board or the chief executive officer;
- cause proper accounts to be kept;
- cause the accounts of the bookshop to be balanced annually to the thirty-first day of December each year and to be presented to Council for submission to the Auditor-General within eight weeks of that day;
- subject to this regulation, exercise any powers necessary or incidental to carrying out the objectives of the bookshop; and
- have any other powers and duties conferred or imposed on it by a statute or by any other regulation.
Committees of the board of management
- The board of management may appoint such committees as it deems necessary.
Staff
- Council may appoint such officers to the bookshop, on such terms and conditions, as it considers appropriate
