Visiting and honorary staff
- (1) Council may appoint fellows and clinical fellows from persons who contribute to the teaching, research or general betterment of the University in an honorary or visiting capacity.
(2) A fellow or a clinical fellow holds office subject to this regulation and any other conditions determined by Council.
(3) An initial appointment under this section shall be on a continuing basis unless otherwise determined by a dean of the faculty*.
Appointment of professorial fellow or clinical professorial fellow
- (1) Council may appoint a visitor or person who contributes in an honorary capacity to the work of the University as a professorial fellow or a clinical professorial fellow.
(2) whilst a person appointed as a clinical professorial fellow is accorded the title of clinical professor.
(3) In considering appointments as professorial fellow or clinical professorial fellow, Council will pay due regard to the general standards applying to the appointment of salaried professorial fellows in the University.
(4) A person appointed as a director in an affiliated, associated or recognised institution in which selection process the University has participated may be appointed as a professorial fellow
(5) A professorial fellow has his or her name added to the list in the Calendar of the appropriate school or department. For all purposes of courtesy, and on ceremonial occasions, a professorial fellow or a clinical professorial fellow is regarded as a professor of the University but is not, by virtue of the office, a member of the Board or of any faculty.
Appointment of principal fellow or clinical principal fellow
- (1) The dean of a faculty* may appoint a visitor or person who contributes in an honorary capacity to the work of the University as a principal fellow or clinical principal fellow
(2)A person appointed as a principal fellow or clinical principal fellow is accorded the title of associate professor whilst a person appointed as a clinical principal fellow is accorded the title clinical associate professor.
(3) In considering appointments as principal fellow or clinical principal fellow, a dean must pay due regard to the general standards applying to the appointment of salaried associate professors in the University.
(4) A principal fellow or clinical principal fellow has his or her name added to the list in the Calendar of the appropriate school or department. For all purposes of courtesy, and on ceremonial occasions, a principal fellow or clinical principal fellow is regarded as an associate professor of the University but is not, by virtue of the office, a member of any faculty.
Appointment of senior fellow or clinical senior fellow
- (1) The dean of a faculty* may appoint a visitor or a person who contributes in an honorary capacity to the work of the University as a senior fellow or a clinical senior fellow.
(2) In considering appointments as senior fellow or a clinical senior fellow, a dean must pay due regard to the general standards applying to the appointment of salaried senior lecturers in the University.
(3) A clinical senior fellow may be titled clinical senior lecturer.
(4) A senior fellow or a clinical senior fellow has his or her name added to the list in the Calendar of the appropriate school or department. For all purposes of courtesy, and on ceremonial occasions, a senior fellow or a clinical senior fellow is regarded as a senior lecturer of the University but is not, by virtue of the office, a member of any faculty.
Appointment of fellow or clinical fellow
- (1) The dean of a faculty * may appoint a visitor or a person who contributes in an honorary capacity to the work of the University as a fellow or a clinical fellow.
(2) A person appointed as a clinical fellow may use the title clinical lecturer.
(3) In considering appointments as fellow or a clinical fellow, a dean must pay due regard to the general standards applying to the appointment of salaried lecturers in the University.
(4) A fellow or a clinical fellow has his or her name added to the list in the Calendar of the appropriate school or department. For all purposes of courtesy, and on ceremonial occasions, a fellow or a clinical fellow is regarded as a lecturer of the University but is not, by virtue of the office, a member of any faculty.
Clinical tutor
- (1) A person may be appointed as a clinical tutor. In making the appointment, the dean must pay due regard to the general standards applying to the appointment of tutor in the University.
Appointment of professor emeritus
- (1) In recognition of distinguished academic service Council may confer the title of professor emeritus on any former professor of the University.
(2) The name of the professor emeritus is published in the Calendar.
(3) A professor emeritus may be appointed a professorial fellow under section 2.
(4) For all purposes of courtesy, and on ceremonial occasions, a professor emeritus is regarded as a professor of the University but is not, by virtue of the office, a member of the Board or of any faculty.

Appointment of visiting professors
- (1) Subject to the approval of a committee of Council ("the committee") convened for that purpose the vice-chancellor may appoint as a visiting professor a senior international visitor. The committee comprises the chancellor (as chair), the vice-chancellor, the president of the Board (or nominee) and a deputy-chancellor.
(2) The committee must decide the term of any such appointment and any conditions applying to each such appointment.
(3) Notwithstanding sections 8(1) and (2), in exceptional circumstances where the vice-chancellor believes it to be imperative that such an appointment be made immediately the vice-chancellor may make such an offer without reference to the committee. The term of appointment and the applicable conditions are to be decided by the vice-chancellor in such circumstances.
