R7.75 - Lesser Endowments

The sums of money listed in the schedule have been accepted by the University for the purpose of endowments other than those for prizes, exhibitions and scholarships on the conditions set out.

It is provided as follows-

  1. Subject to any direction to the contrary in the gift each of the sums and any accumulations and additions to them must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise.
  2. The income from each sum, subject to the deduction of necessary expenses, is applied to the purposes of the appropriate endowment as set out in the schedule.
  3. Any surplus or unexpended income from any of the sums must, unless Council directs otherwise, be added to the amount of the appropriate sum.

SCHEDULE

1.

(1948) ALDWORTH (CRAIG) MEMORIAL
Original Amount of Fund: $300
Donor: By subscription from the former students of Aldworth Preparatory School. The income of the fund is used for the purchase of books for the library. All books purchased must be inscribed "Presented by the Aldworth (Craig) Memorial."

2.

(1966) KENNEL CONTROL COUNCIL CANINE RESEARCH TRUST
Original Amount of Fund: $1,162
Donor: Kennel Control Council of Victoria. The income of the fund is used by the Council on the recommendation of the faculty of Veterinary Science for research into the care and health of dogs.

(1968) G. W. LEEPER COLLECTION FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $1,299

Donor: By subscription from friends and associates of Professor G. W. Leeper. The income of the fund is used by the Council on the recommendation of the dean of the faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture for the purchase of books on Scientific and Literary Criticism and the Philosophy of Science for the School of Agriculture Library. All books purchased must be inscribed "Presented by the Geoffrey Leeper Collection Fund".

(1949) MICHELL-BARNARD FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $301

Donor: Mathematical Association of Victoria and others. The income of the fund is used for the purchase of books for the Mathematics Departmental Library. Allbooks purchased must be inscribed "Purchased by the Michell-Barnard Fund".

(1968) ERNST MATTHAEI MEMORIAL FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $633

Donor: By subscription of friends of Ernst Matthaei. The income of the fund is used to establish and maintain (within the University) a glass collection, particularly of early wine and drinking glasses.

( ) R. M. & R. CRAWFORD FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $1,000

Donor: Professor Emeritus Raymond Maxwell Crawford and his wife Ruth Crawford. The capital of the fund may be invested in securities other than authorised trustee investments. The income of the fund is used for the purposes of the department of History on the recommendation of the Ernest Scott professor of History and the Max Crawford professor of History.

(1973) SPERO WILSON MEMORIAL FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $4,581

The income of the fund is used to provide annual scholarships for undergraduate or postgraduate students in the faculty of Law ("the faculty") to be called the Spero Wilson Memorial Scholarships or for the purchase of books for undergraduate or postgraduate students in the faculty or for any other purposes as the dean of the faculty in his absolute discretion determines, provided that every purpose for which the income is expended must be associated with the name of Spero Wilson.

( ) FRITZ DURAS MEMORIAL FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $1,726

Donor: By subscription of friends of Fritz Duras. The net income of the fund is used to assist in the provision of a memorial lecture to be delivered biennially at the national conference of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation or such other national conference of teachers of Physical Education as the Council of the University from time to time directs.

( ) KITSON CLARK FUND Original amount of Fund: $2,724

Donor: Dr. G. Kitson Clark. The net income of the fund is to be used for the purchase of books, or other items of equipment for use in the department of History on the recommendation of the head of the department.
10. (1999) ROBINA ALISON HINDHAUGH BEQUEST
Original Amount of Fund: $74,938.63
Donor: On 26 April 1994 Mrs. Robina Alison Hindhaugh by her will bequeathed to the University for the purpose of assisting in financing the department of Medicine situated in the Royal Melbourne Hospital in its research into and the treatment of rheumatic diseases. In each year the net annual income of the fund is to be used for the purpose unless the Council, at the request of the department, approves a resort to the capital of the fund for the purpose
11 (1999) ELIZABETH ANNE FOOTE
Original Amount of Fund: $88,966.75
Donor: In August 1986 Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Foote by her will bequeathed to the University for the purpose of assisting the department of Medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In each year the net annual income of the fund is to be used for the purpose unless the Council, at the request of the department, approves a resort to the capital of the fund for the purpose.

(1975) MARY FISHER MEYER BEQUEST
Original Amount of Fund:$20,000
Amount of Fund at1 October 1999: $58,634.00

Donor: Mary Fisher Meyer by her will. The income of the fund is to be used from time to time to buy rare books for the Medical Rare Book Collection in the Brownless Medical Library or put towards extensions to that Library. All books acquired from this bequest must record that they were purchased from the fund. The Council at any time may direct that the whole or any part of the capital be resorted to for this purpose.

(1976) ANDREW KELSO MEMORIAL FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $2,500
Amount of Fund at 1 October 1999: $6,000

Donors: Mr and Mrs Graham Kelso, parents of Andrew Kelso, a Forestry student killed climbing in the New Zealand Alps in 1976. The fund is used to purchase books for the Forestry department of the faculty of Land and Food Resources. Books bought from the fund must bear the memorial inscription approved by the donors.

(1992) BETTY ROSALIE RICHARDS BEQUEST
Original Amount of Fund: $50,000
Amount of Fund at 31 October 1999: $51,620

Donor: Betty Rosalie Richards by her will. The annual income of the fund is used for the benefit of the faculty of Veterinary Science ("the faculty") at Werribee on the recommendation of the dean of the faculty. The Council may at any time direct that the whole or part of the capital be resorted to for this purpose.

(1969) INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITIES CHORAL FESTIVAL FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $39,950
Amount of Fund at 31 October 1999: $12,000

Donor: The Australian Universities Festival Choir of Melbourne. The University agreed to establish a fund to support the Australian Universities Festival Choir of Melbourne for the purpose of assisting future international university choir projects. The fund is administered by the faculty of Music, on whose recommendation the Council may direct that capital may be resorted to for the purpose stated above.
16 (1966) PERCIVAL GEORGE CHARKER BEQUEST
Original Amount of Fund: $568.78Amount of Fund at 31 October 1999: $8,579.88
Donor: Percival George Charker by his will. The bequest is "to be used at the discretion of the Registrar for the promotion of the study of Mathematics within the University.". The role of the registrar is to be exercised by the senior vice-principal, the office of registrar having been abolished.

(1962) CLIVE DISHER TRUST FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $1,000
Amount of Fund at31 October 1999: $7,100.00

Donor: Brigadier Dr. (Harold) Clive Disher, CBE, ED, MD, DA(RCP&S), OStJ, a graduate of the University, stroke of the AIF No. 1 Crew which won the King's Cup for Allied Service Eights at Royal Henly Peace Regatta in 1919 for which he was named "Athlete of the Year" for Australasia, for the Helms Trophy. Clive Disher was one of Australia's great oarsmen and he was a patron of the Melbourne University Boat Club ("the club"). He donated £500 to the University to establish the "Clive Disher Trust Fund", directing that the income be paid annually to the club, preferably for the purpose of meeting the expenses of Inter Varsity Crew.

(1986) DULCIE GAM TRUST
Original Donation: 800 property trust units valued at $8,480
Amount of Fund at 31 October 1999, following sale of the units in 1999: $26,861

Donors: In 1986 Mrs. Dulcie Gam of Wauchope, in the State of Victoria, donated to the University 800 units valued at $8,480 in the Hooker Prime Property Growth Fund which later became the Colonial Mutual Prime Property Securities Fund. The University sold the units in 1999 for $26,861. The net annual income of the fund is to be used for research into tinnitus and deafness provided that, in the event of such research being discontinued, it is to be used for similar research in the department of Otolaryngology ("the department"). Expenditure of the income is to be approved by the Council on the recommendation of the head of the department.
19 (1984) INTERNATIONAL HOUSE TUTORSHIP FUND

Donors: The R.E. Ross Trust. The net annual income of the fund is to be used by the Council of International House to provide a tutorial program in English as a second language for students resident in International House.
20 (1969) LORNA STIRLING TUTORSHIP FUND

Donor: The Council of International House allocated $20,000 from the bequest of Miss L.M.B. Stirling to establish a separate fund called the Lorna Stirling Tutorship Fund ('the fund'). The net annual income of the fund is to be used to provide the salary of a tutoring program for students resident in International House.
21 (1984) ARTHUR FRASER BEQUEST
Original Amount of Bequest: $48,414
Amount of Fund as at 27 February 2001:

Accumulated Income: $14,299
Donor: Arthur Fraser of Langwarrin, Victoria who died in 1984 bequeathed to the University the residue of his estate for cardiovascular research. The income of the fund is applied by the Council on the recommendation of the head of the department of Pathology for cardiovascular research.
22 (1964) ENID VIOLET OCHILTREE MERRIFIELD BEQUEST

Amount of Fund as at 27 February 2001:

Accumulated Income: $2,623
Miss Enid Violet Ochiltree Merrifield of Brighton, Victoria, a bacteriologist in the Public Health Laboratory of the University until her retirement in 1960 and who died in 1962, bequeathed the residue of her estate to the University, the income to be used for the department of Bacteriology. The department of Bacteriology is now the department of Microbiology and Immunology ('the department'). The income is applied by the Council for the department on the recommendation of the head of the department. In the event of the income being insufficient for the specified purpose prescribed in the testatrix's will both the capital and income may be used by the Council at its absolute discretion.
23 (1998) ) THE ROTARY DISTRICT 9800 ABORIGINAL VOCATIONAL FUND
Original Amount of Fund: $2,000
Amount of fund at 28 February 2007
Capital: $78,219.18
Accumulated Income: $5,176.33
Donor: Rotary District 9800 established the fund in 1990. Various Rotary Clubs within District 9800 subsequently made further contributions. In each year the net annual income of the fund is to be applied by Council on the recommendation of the Indigenous Scholarships and Awards Committee (or such other committee as is appointed by Council from time to time) to provide financial assistance to indigenous students."
24 (1956) THE RUSSELL HAYMAN MEMORIAL FUND
Original Amount of fund: £800.00
Amount of Fund at 16 August 2001: $14,386.13
Donors: Friends of Russell Hayman, a graduate of the faculty of Law who was killed in a flying accident in 1955, by deed dated 24 September 1956. The net annual income of the fund is applied either to purchasing books for the library in the faculty of Law ('the faculty') or to assist a graduate of the faculty to undertake postgraduate study overseas. Applications of the fund should be identified with the Russell Hayman Memorial Fund and books purchased from the fund must bear an appropriate bookplate indicating that they were provided from the fund. The income is expended by the Council on the recommendation of the dean of the faculty.
25 (2000) THE DOUGLAS SHANNON BEQUEST
Original Amount of Fund: $37,608.62
Donor: Douglas Carmello Shannon, DipArch(1932) Melb. who died on 23 June 2000 was a Melbourne University Rugby Blue member and as Chief Architect for the Army in Melbourne, designed the Melbourne University Regiment Building in Grattan Street. He bequeathed one tenth of the residue of his estate to the University 'for the general purposes of the Sports Association with a request that part of it be directed to the Blues Association'. The net annual income of the fund is applied by Council on the recommendation of the Melbourne University Sports Association for the promotion of the Melbourne University Sports Association and including the Melbourne University Sports Association Blues.
26 (1996) THE KOORI STUDENT SUPPORT FUND
Original amount of fund: $5,000
Further contributions to the fund were made by the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation.
Amount of fund at 31 December 2006 (the date immediately prior to the date on which the Victorian College of the Arts became a faculty of the University):

Donor: Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation to establish a fund to support indigenous Australian students at the faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts (‘the faculty’). The capital and income of the fund is to be applied by Council from time to time, on the recommendation of the head of the Wilin Centre, to support indigenous Australian students studying at the faculty
27 (2005)THE PROFESSOR EMERITUS HOWARD EDDEY MEMORIAL FUND
Original Amount of fund :$10,000
Amount of fund at 31 August 2007: $12,400.59
Donor: Pamela McPherson, of Grovedale, Victoria, by letter dated 12 September 2005, to establish or augment a fund for research into the diagnosis and educational management of hearing impaired children, in memory of her late father Professor Emeritus Howard Hadfield Eddey CMG BSc MB BS (1935) (Melb.), who in 1966 was appointed professor of Surgery at the Austin Hospital and associate dean of the faculty of Medicine at this University, which positions he held until his retirement in 1975. The net annual income of the fund is to be applied by Council on the recommendation of the dean of the faculty of Education towards research into the diagnosis and educational management of hearing impaired children.”
28 (1984)THE M SUTHERLAND FUND
Original amount of fund: $5,000
Annual receipts for composer’s royalties are also paid into this fund.
Amount of fund at 31 December 2006 (the date immediately prior to the date on which the Victorian College of the Arts became a faculty of the University):
$9,025.01
Donors: The late Margaret Ada Sutherland, a leading Australian composer who died on 12 August 1984, under her will dated 9 August 1983, and the residuary beneficiaries of her estate who assigned to the faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts (‘the faculty’) their entitlement to composer’s royalties. The faculty determined to apply the royalties for the same purpose as the bequest. The capital and income of the fund are to be applied by Council from time to time, on the recommendation of the head of the discipline of Music (‘head of Music’) at the faculty for the musical education of the students in the discipline of Music at the faculty.
29 (2004) THE ORAL CANCER RESEARCH FUND
Original Amount of fund: $20,500
Amount of fund at 31 October 2007:$18,510
Donor: The Australian and New Zealand Head and Neck Society, for the school of Dental Science with a strong request by letter dated 25 August 2004 that a fund be established to be made available for well-documented requests for assistance with specific purposes concerned with oral cancer research. Until the University decides otherwise, the capital and net annual income of the fund may be applied by Council from time to time on the recommendation of the head of the school of Dental Science (‘the school’) for well-documented requests from the school for assistance with specific purposes concerned with oral cancer research. Unspent income in any year may be added to the capital of the fund or be retained as income to be applied in any subsequent year for the purpose of the fund.
