R6.264 – The Olive Battersby Scholarship Fund

Recitals –

  1. On or about 26 February 2007, Joan Kent and John Battersby (‘the donors’) donated the sum of $200,000.00. The purpose of the donation was to establish a fund to provide one or more scholarships annually to students enrolled or to be enrolled in the course for the degree of master of Teaching.

  2. The fund is named in memory of their sister, the late Olive Battersby BA (Melb), who worked for the University from 1948 until 1987. Her roles included that of assistant to a former dean of Education, tutor, and librarian in the former faculty of Education for 14 years. She received a Fulbright Award in 1952.

  3. At 5 June 2008, the amount of the fund was $219,195.49.

It is provided as follows-

  1. The sum of $219,195.49, and any accumulations and additions to the sum, forms a fund called ‘The Olive Battersby Scholarship Fund’ (‘the fund’) and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until Council directs otherwise.

  2. The net annual income of the fund is to be used to provide one or more scholarships each of which is to be known as ‘The Olive Battersby Scholarship’, to be awarded annually by Council on the recommendation of the dean of Melbourne Graduate School of Educationto students enrolled or to be enrolled in the course for the degree of master of Teaching, for tuition fees and living expenses.

  3. Each scholarship is of such value as the University may on each occasion determine.
