Recitals –
- The late Iona Hodgson, formerly of 66 North Road, Brighton, Victoria, retired, (‘the testatrix’) who died on 24 August 2003 by her will dated 24 November 1994 (‘the will’) provided –
‘… TO GIVE the balance thereafter remaining to THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE to be used by it for the purpose of a post graduate scholarship to be known as THE JOHN HODGSON SCHOLARSHIP to be awarded alternately to graduate students in the faculties of Music and Science …’
- The testatrix was born in January 1906 and came to Australia with her son John David Hodgson in 1947.
- John David Hodgson was born in 1934 and graduated BSc (Melb.) in 1957. He had an interest in music. In December 1957 he died in a mountain-climbing accident on Mt Cook, New Zealand, aged 23.
- In September 2007 the University received the sum of $157,332.24 in satisfaction of the bequest.
- At 31 October 2007, the amount of the fund was $158,363.32.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $158,363.32, and any accumulations and additions to the sum, forms a fund called ‘The John Hodgson Scholarship’ (‘the fund’) and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until Council directs otherwise.
- The net annual income of the fund is to be used to provide ‘The John Hodgson Scholarship’ to be awarded annually by Council alternately to a graduate student in the faculty of Music and a graduate student in the faculty of Science on the recommendation of the dean of the relevant faculty.
