R6.211 - THE MADELEINE ORR SCHOLARSHIP
Recitals-
- Mrs Madeleine Grace Hearly, who was also known as Madeleine Grace
Orr, an actress of 2 Merton Avenue, Elwood, Victoria and also of 343
Kensington High Street, London, United Kingdom who died on 29 June
1979 bequeathed to the University, subject to a life interest, one
third of the proceeds of the sale of the property Unit 2, 684 Hawthorn
Road, Brighton East.
- The bequest was 'to the CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC OF THE UNIVERSITY
OF MELBOURNE with the direction that the same be applied for the purposes
of providing a Scholarship to be known as THE MADELEINE ORR SCHOLARSHIP
for a student of such Conservatorium of Music of the said UNIVERSITY
OF MELBOURNE in piano forte'.
- The Conservatorium of Music is now the faculty of Music.

On the expiry of the life interest on 10 October 2000 the University
received $74,504.42 in satisfaction of the bequest.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $74,504.42 and any accumulations and additions to the
sum form a fund called 'The Madeleine Orr Scholarship' ('the fund')
and the fund must be placed in an investment pool and remain there
until the Council directs otherwise.
- The scholarship is awarded annually by the Council on the recommendation
of the dean of the faculty of Music ('the faculty') to a talented
full time student enrolled in a degree course in pianoforte in the
faculty. In making any such recommendation the dean of the faculty
('the dean') may take into consideration the financial needs of the
candidates.
- The scholarship is of such value as the Council on the recommendation
of the dean may determine, but must not exceed the net annual income
of the fund.
