Regulation 6.1.R7 - The School of Veterinary Science

 

  1. The school of Veterinary Science, within the faculty of Veterinary Science, is constituted from and includes the department of Veterinary Science and the department of Veterinary Clinic and Hospital established pursuant to Regulation 6.1.R7 of Council made pursuant to Statute 6.1.
  2. The overall purpose and responsibility of the school is the promotion of undergraduate teaching, postgraduate teaching, research and the provision of veterinary and scientific services and includes the following academic and administrative responsibilities within the school-
    1. The co-ordination of appropriate undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and training activities including relationships with other departments and schools of the University,
    2. The consideration of needs for equipment, accommodation, teaching, training and research,
    3. The preparation and operation of all budgets within the school,
    4. The deployment and supervision of academic, technical and administrative staff and associated resources within the school,
    5. The encouragement and maintenance of research projects within the school, including those funded by and conducted in collaboration with external organisations, and also the maintenance of those internally initiated projects,
    6. The establishment and co-ordination of committees and sub-committees covering any area of the school,
    7. The future form and development of the school,
    8. The promotion of fee-paying continuing education programmes for the veterinary profession and for special interest groups serving the animal industries,
    9. To advise faculty of any matters which it considers appropriate.
  3. (1) The school of Veterinary Science has a head and deputy head who are, respectively, the dean and deputy dean of the faculty of Veterinary Science.

    (2) The head is responsible to the University through the faculty of Veterinary Science for implementing the policies determined by the University generally, by the faculty of Veterinary Science and by the school, and for ensuring that the school fully discharges its academic and administrative functions. The head seeks the advice of the committee of the school on matters of long term policy and keep the committee informed on matters of executive action.

    (3) The deputy head assumes responsibilities of the head during the absence of the head for a period of five days or more, or at the request of the head for any period of less than five days.
  4. There is a committee of the school consisting of the following members-

    1. The head and deputy head of the school,
    2. The professors of the school,
    3. The heads of each of the constituent departments [i.e. head of department of Veterinary Science and director of the Veterinary Clinic and Hospital],
    4. Such associate deans (appointed pursuant to Statute 5.3.8) as the faculty may designate,
    5. Such other members as may be co-opted from time to time on the basis of their special knowledge on particular matters being considered.
      No person may simultaneously hold appointment as head of the school and head of a department in the school.
  5. The function of the committee is to recommend to the dean of the faculty on the policy of the school with regard to its academic and administrative responsibilities and to advise the dean on the execution of those policies.
