Regulation 6.1.R7 - The University of Melbourne School of Music

 

  1. The University of Melbourne school of music is a department within the faculty of Music consisting of those members of the academic staff who are appointed to be members of staff of the school and such sections as may be determined from time to time by the school.
  2. The purposes of the school are to-
    1. foster and develop a wide range of musical talents and skills, preparing students to take their places in the community as teachers, performers, composers, music therapists, musicologists, or in other occupations requiring musical skills,
    2. foster excellence in appropriate areas of research and scholarship in music studies, promoting understanding in music as an art and its historical development, and
    3. promote informed interest in music, and the performance of music, within the University and the community.
  3. The overall responsibility of the school is teaching, training and research in the science and art of music, and the promotion of musical culture, in co-operation with other schools, departments and faculties within the University and includes the following academic and administrative responsibilities within the school-
    1. the provision of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training activities;
    2. the promotion and support of research activities in music, including the encouragement and consideration of proposals for research projects;
    3. the organisation and promotion of public performances of music and other related activities;
    4. the consideration of needs for equipment, accommodation, teaching, training and research;
    5. the preparation and operation of budgets and the control of finance;
    6. the deployment and supervision of technical and administrative staff;
    7. the allocation and use of administrative and technical resources;
    8. the establishment and co-ordination of committees and sub-committees covering the various areas of the school's activities;
    9. the provision of advice direct to both the faculty and the Academic Board on any matter which it considers appropriate.
  4. (1) The head of the school is assisted by a school committee comprising -

    the head and deputy head of the school,
    the dean of the faculty,
    the professors of Music,
    ten members elected by and from the readers, senior lecturers, lecturers and full time tutors of the school,
    two members elected by and from the part-time teaching staff,
    two members elected by and from the students of the school, and
    up to three co-opted members.

    (2) The school committee, which assists and advises the head of school, in the settling and implementation of policy in the school, must meet at least three times per year.

  5. (1) Pursuant to Statute 6.1.8 there is a dean and deputy dean of the faculty and a head and deputy head of the school.

    (2) The head of the school has full powers to transact the business of the school. The head is responsible to the University for implementing the policies determined by the University generally, and for ensuring that the school fully discharges its academic and administrative functions.

    (3) The deputy head assumes all powers and responsibilities of the head during the absence of the head for a period of five days or more, or at the request of the head for any period less than five days.

  6. The school may appoint a school of music advisory committee consisting of persons with experience and interests relevant to the academic and professional concerns of the school, to advise the school on its policies.
