Interpretation
- In this regulation-
"recognised institution" means a hospital, a hospital network, research organisation or health agency recognised under section 3 of this regulation;
"faculty" means the faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
Clinical instruction and practice
- Clinical instruction and practice prescribed for courses at the University are to be undertaken in the University and in recognised institutions.
Recognised institutions
- With the agreement of the governing body of a hospital, a hospital network, research organisation or health agency, the Council may recognise the institution1 as a proper place-
- for fulfilling the requirements for degrees and diplomas in the faculty;
- for the instruction and supervision of the prescribed work of students proceeding in specified disciplines to the degree of doctor of Philosophy; and
- being associated for teaching purposes with clinical schools2 for the conduct of clinical instruction and practice in a specified discipline.
Establishment of clinical schools
- (1) Clinical schools may be established in any recognised institution.
(2) A clinical school may be either:
- a general clinical school, for general clinical instruction and practice; or
- a special school, for clinical instruction and practice in a specified discipline3.
Staff
- (1) The staff of each clinical school consists of :
- members of staff of the University of and above the rank of lecturer or fellow who have teaching responsibilities at the recognised institution;
- members of staff of the recognised institution who are approved as clinical instructors by the Council; and
- any other persons the Council and the governing body of the recognised institution consider appropriate.
(2) The Council may appoint as fellow, senior fellow, principal fellow or a clinical instructor any member of staff of a recognised institution who is recommended for that appointment by the dean of the faculty.
(3) The Council may appoint as professorial fellow any member of staff of a recognised institution who is recommended for that appointment by the dean of the faculty.
Executive committee
- (1) An executive committee comprising not less than three members of staff of the clinical school must be established by each clinical school.
(2) The executive committee is responsible to the faculty for the superintendence and conduct of the clinical school and has such powers and duties as are conferred upon it by the statutes and regulations or by resolutions of the faculty.
Chairperson of the executive committee
- The clinical dean or other officer of the clinical school nominated by the dean of the faculty chairs the executive committee and, subject to the statutes and regulations and to the resolutions of the faculty, is responsible for:
- submitting the proposed programme of clinical instruction at the clinical school to the faculty for its consideration;
- the organisation for teaching purposes of clinical practice, demonstrations and lectures;
- reporting on the performance of the instructors and students;
- administering the funds allocated by the University for expenditure by the clinical school; and
- maintaining discipline amongst the students at the clinical school in collaboration with designated officers of the recognised institutions.
Academic titles
- The Council may, after consultation with the Board, confer an appropriate academic title on any member of staff of a recognised institution.
Liaison
- The dean of the faculty or the assistant dean appointed for the purpose pursuant to Statute 5.3.11 or the associate dean (dental science) in the case of the special clinical school at The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne is responsible for liaison between the University and governing bodies of recognised institutions.
