R6.183 - THE HELEN MACPHERSON SMITH
FELLOWSHIPS
Recitals-
- The trustees of the Helen M. Schutt Trust in
1990 donated the sum of $200,000 to the University to endow fellowships
to the Melbourne Business School.
- The Trustees consider that women are under-represented
in management positions and have in the past, for a variety of reasons,
been discouraged from and disadvantaged in study, teaching and research
in the management area.
- In order to reduce the disadvantage suffered
by women in, or interested in management, a programme is to be established
for fellowships to be awarded to women on the terms and conditions
which follow.
- To mark the Trust's 50th anniversary,
the trustees changed the name of the Trust from 1 July 2002 and wrote
to the University that it was "to be known as the Helen Macpherson
Smith Trust to reflect the family wealth which emanated from her grandfather
John Macpherson and her father Robert Smith" and asked that the
University award the fellowships in the name of the Helen Macpherson
Smith Trust
- The sum of $200,000 remained $200,000 at 31 December
1994
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $200,000 and any accumulations and
additions to the sum forms a fund called the 'Helen Macpherson Smith
Fellowships Fund' ('the fund') and the fund must be paid into an investment
pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise
- The net annual income of the fund is applied
by the Council on the recommendation of the Director of the Melbourne
Business School ("the school") to provide fellowships to women from
academic institutions, business and government organisations to enable
them to study, teach or research in the school.
- After the expiration of five years from the
establishment of the fund the capital of the fund may also be resorted
to for the purpose set out above.
