A. Jeanie Mary Jessie Adelaide Rodger, late
of Railway Crescent, Williamstown in Victoria, who died on 5 March
1982 by her will dated 24 February 1982, bequeathed to the University
the sum of $20,000 "for the purpose of establishing a fund to be called
"The Pearis Rodger Scholarship" to assist students outside the faculty
of Music to continue their study in pianoforte within the faculty".
B. The sum of $20,000 was received in satisfaction
of the bequest and the capital of the fund at 31 December 1994 was
$58,256.
1. The sum of $58,256 and any accumulations and additions
to the sum forms a fund called the "Pearis Rodger Scholarship Fund"
("the fund") and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and
remain there until the Council directs otherwise.
2. (1) The net income of the fund must be applied by the
Council to the provision of a scholarship or scholarships in Music
each of which is to be known as "The Pearis Rodger Scholarship".
(2) The scholarship or scholarships ("the scholarships") are open
for award, in any year in which the faculty of Music ("the faculty")
deems that the sum available is sufficient, to an undergraduate
student or students in another faculty or a person or persons selected
for admission in that year to the courses for the degrees of bachelor
of the faculty who have applied to study pianoforte as their principal
instrument in a major sequence of studies in Music Performance.
(3) Applications for the scholarship are to be invited by notice
on the University notice board and by such other means as the faculty
deems advisable and are in general to be lodged with the academic
registrar on or before the first day of February.
3. (1) The award is made by the Council on the recommendation
of the faculty.
(2) In making its recommendation the faculty must have regard to
the financial need of each of the candidates and their competence
to continue the study of pianoforte as their principal instrument
in a major sequence of studies in Music Performance ("the appointed
course").
(3) Subject to the enrolment of the scholar in consecutive years
during the course, a scholarship is to be awarded for the duration
of the scholar's appointed course.
(4) Notwithstanding sub-section (3) if, through illness or other
cause deemed sufficient by the Council, a scholar is temporarily
prevented from continuing the appointed course, the Council may
on the recommendation of the faculty suspend the scholarship for
a period not exceeding two years.
4. The value of the scholarship in each year during its tenure
is to be such amount, within the limits of the net income available,
as the faculty, having regard to the demonstrated need of the scholar,
may determine.
5. From the net annual income of the fund an amount may be
retained and added to the capital of the fund, which amount is to
be determined by the faculty from time to time on the advice of the
academic registrar or other officer of the University charged with
financial responsibility for the fund.
