Recitals-
- Maurice Cohen, LLM, solicitor of Melbourne presented to the University the sum of $1,000 for the purpose of founding an annual prize in Law in the name of Sir George Whitecross Paton, sometime professor of Jurisprudence and dean of the faculty of Law and a former vice-chancellor of the University. In 1984 Mr Cohen gave a further sum of $500 towards the endowment.
- From 2008, the faculty of Law became a graduate school established as a faculty known as Melbourne Law School.
- The capital was $1,822 at 31 December 1994.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $1,822 and any accumulations and additions to the fund forms a fund called the ‘Sir George Paton Prize’ (‘fund’) and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise.
- The prize is awarded annually to the top ranked student in a subject in the field of commercial law, such subject to be determined from time to time by the dean of Melbourne Law School.
- The value of the prize is the net annual income of the fund.
