Recitals-
- John Gilmour, formerly of 46 Abbotsford Street, North Melbourne, who died on 11 March 1958, bequeathed to his Trustees certain of his estate upon trust to hold the same in perpetual Trust to be known as "The John and Allan Gilmour Trust" and to apply the income thereof annually (or at such longer periods as to them may seem convenient) in the promotion of medical or scientific research or both at the University of Melbourne for the benefit of mankind.
- The University agreed that the income be used to provide a scholarship to a student for a higher degree involving medical or scientific research or for the award of grants for the conduct of medical or scientific research in the departments of the appropriate faculties of the University.
It is provided as follows-
- The income is used from time to time as to provide a research award or research awards, each of which is known as a "John and Allan Gilmour Research Award".
- (1) An award may take the form of a scholarship or a grant.
(2) A scholarship may be awarded to a candidate for a higher degree involving research in a medical or scientific field.
(3) A grant may be made to initiate, assist or continue medical or scientific research work being undertaken in a department with the approval of the appropriate faculty.
(4) Each scholarship or research grant is awarded by the Council in such manner and on such terms as the Council may from time to time determine. - The awards may be made from time to time whenever the income is deemed sufficient by the Council.
- The tenure of any scholarship does not normally exceed two years, but the Council may renew the scholarship for a period not exceeding one year.
