R6.102 - THE GILBERT RIGG SCHOLARSHIP

Recitals-

  1. Miss Rebecca Rigg of 32 Finch Street, East Malvern, Victoria who died on 14 May 1958 bequeathed part of her estate to the University-

    'to apply the income thereof in perpetuity for the promotion and encouragement of study and research in Mining and Metallugy or either of them in manner hereafter appearing. The income of the fund … shall be applied in establishing and maintaining a scholarship to be called 'The Gilbert Rigg Scholarship' to be from time to time awarded in manner hereafter mentioned to such persons whether under-graduates or graduates as the University shall select and to be held and enjoyed as hereafter provided to enable him/her to pursue his/her studies in Mining and Metallurgy or either of those subjects and subject to such conditions of the student's study as regards time, place and generally as the governing body of the University shall in each case decide and I express my wish that the University will from time to time when in its opinion it shall be feasible for it to do so grant a travelling scholarship for the purpose aforesaid payable out of the income of the fund.'

  2. The University received £3, 817.5.1

  3. On the expiry of a life interest on 12 November 1971 the University received a further sum of $46,000 to augment the fund.

  4. On 18 November 2003 the Supreme Court of Victoria made an Order concerning the fields of research for the scholarship in the terms contained in Section 4 below.

  5. At 13 February 2004 the capital was $523,800.22 and the accumulated income was $147,253.76.

It is provided as follows-

  1. The sum of $523,800.22 and any accumulations and additions to the sum is to form a fund called the 'Gilbert Rigg Scholarship' ('the fund') and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise.

  2. The net income of the fund is to be applied to providing 'The Gilbert Rigg Scholarship'.

  3. The scholarship is to be awarded annually by Council on the recommendation of the dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

  4. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to the student enrolled in a higher degree by research who is undertaking research in a field related to Mining and Metallurgy in the department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, the department of Geomatics, the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the school of Earth Sciences or any other department of the University that may offer subjects relevant to Mining and Metallurgy.

  5. The scholarship may be awarded as a traveling scholarship.

  6. The scholarship is to be awarded for a term of one year or such other terms as Council may determine.

  7. The value of the scholarship is to be the net annual income of the fund.
