Recitals-

  1. On 12 July 1916, Joseph Levi on behalf of himself and his wife Kate Levi (‘the donors’) donated the sum of £1,000. In a letter of that date to the University the donors said that their donation was ‘…for the purpose of founding and endowing a Scholarship for Medicine to be called “THE KEITH LEVI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP”…’

  2. The fund is named in memory of the son of the donors, the late Keith Maurice Levi MB, BS, AAMC, No 1 General Hospital, AIF and formerly of Royal Perth Hospital, Western Australia. He was a captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps attached as a regimental medical officer to the 2 nd Hampshire Regiment, was mentioned in despatches, and was killed in action at Cape Helles, Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.

  3. The University made regulation R6.32 to govern a scholarship which was open for competition annually at the final assessment for the degrees of bachelor of Medicine and bachelor of Surgery, for award to the candidate who secured the highest aggregate of marks in the assessment in Medicine. However, the income was at an insufficient level for a scholarship.Further due to the total restructuring of the medical degree course in 1999 there was no longer a subject called ‘Medicine’. Therefore the Universitymade a cy près application to the Attorney-General for Victoria.

  4. On date 21 November 2006, the Attorney-General sanctioned the following scheme pursuant to section 4 of the Charities Act 1978 (Vic.) to vary the trust known as ‘The Keith Levi Memorial Scholarship’-

    1. ' The income of the fund be applied to now provide a prize;
      1. called The Keith Levi Prize;
      2. awarded annually;
      3. to the top student in the subject Integrated Clinical Practice;
      4. having the value of the net annual income; and
    2. If the subject Integrated Clinical Practice ceases to be taught, the prize be awarded for the subject closest to the original subject at that time.’
  5. At 30 July 2008, the amount of the fund was $8,105.89.

It is provided as follows-

  1. The sum of $8,105.89, and any accumulations and additions to the sum, forms a fund called ‘The Keith Levi Prize’ (‘the fund’) and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until Council directs otherwise.
  2. The net annual income of the fund is to be used to provide a prize to be known as ‘The Keith Levi Prize’ (‘the prize’), which is to be awarded annually by the University on the recommendation of the dean of the faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to the top student in the subject ‘Integrated Clinical Practice’.
  3. Before making any such recommendation the dean must consult the head of the school of Medicine.
  4. If the subject ‘Integrated Clinical Practice’ ceases to be taught, the prize is to be awarded for the subject closest to the original subject at that time.
[Revoked and remade 1/9/08.]
