Regulation 5.2.R1 - The University of Melbourne School of Graduate Research

1. The objectives of the School of Graduate Research are to-
   
   

   1. support, promote and enhance the development of research based higher degree studies in every part of the University;

   2. take responsibility for regulation and oversight of the PhD and M Phil programs of the University in conjunction with faculties;
   3. administer the scholarship and other postgraduate awards of the University and, in collaboration with the faculties, seek to gain additional financial support for research based higher degree students in the University;
   4. maintain general oversight of the quality of research supervision in the University and to monitor completion rates in research based higher degree programs. In exercising these functions, the School of Graduate Research must maintain dialogue with the faculties and report from time to time to the Research and Graduate Studies Committee of the Academic Board;
   5. maintain a collegial life within the School of Graduate Research, seeking to foster interdisciplinary communication, dialogue and debate amongst research based higher degree students and academic staff, and to maintain an active interface with community interest through an active seminar program;
   6. enhance the development of presentation and communication skills in research based higher degree students and to support such students in the process of preparation of theses with expert advice and access to facilities for illustration and other special forms of presentation; and
   7. work in conjunction with the Centre for the Study of Higher Education to ensure that all research based higher degree students have the opportunity of introduction to teaching skills in preparation for academic careers
