Regulation 5.1.R4 - Melbourne Business School1.

Interpretation

  1. In this regulation-

    School’ means the Melbourne Business School.

Establishment of the School

  1. The Melbourne Business School is hereby established as a department of the University directly responsible to the Board.

Objectives

  1. The objectives of the School are to-
    1. provide undergraduate and postgraduate courses in business administration;
    2. conduct and administer advanced management courses of various kinds not leading to a degree or diploma;
    3. encourage and conduct research into business and public organisations and their management;
    4. work for the improvement of management education throughout Australia;
    5. encourage the dissemination, by publication or otherwise, of the results of research into business and public organisations and their management wherever that research was carried out;
    6. develop and publish teaching materials in the field of business administration and, in particular, materials based on Australian experience and problems; and
    7. contribute to management development programmes in business and public organisations.

Board of management - composition

  1. The Council must establish a board of management of the School consisting of-

    1. the vice-chancellor;
    2. the deputy vice-chancellors;
    3. the director of the School;
    4. the deputy director of the School;
    5. two members elected annually from amongst their number by the members of the full-time academic staff of the School;
    6. six other persons appointed by the Council who are engaged in the management of business, finance, commerce, industry or public service; and
    7. two other persons appointed by the Council who are members of the academic staff of the University in relevant areas outside the school.
  2. The Council must appoint one of the members of the board of management appointed under paragraph (1)(f) to chair the board.

 

Functions of the board of management

  1. Subject to the statutes and to any regulation of the Council, the board of management must-
    1. have such powers as are necessary to fulfil the objectives of the School;
    2. advise the director, the Board, and the Council on matters relating to the School; and
    3. take steps to generate close and continuing relationships between the School and the Australian management community.

Director of the School

  1. The Council must appoint a director of the School for a period of not more than seven years.
  2. By virtue of the appointment, the director of the School holds office as head of the department.
  3. The director of the School (‘the director’) may use the title of ‘dean’ of the School as he or she deems appropriate for the benefit of the School. However, the use of the title will not constitute the director as a dean of a faculty and references to ‘dean’ or ‘deans’ throughout the statutes and regulations of the University will not include the director unless expressly stated to the contrary.

 

Duties of the director

  1. The director of the School must-

    1. be responsible to the Council through the Board for the management of academic matters connected with any course leading to a degree or diploma;
    2. maintain liaison with faculties to ensure that normal academic procedures are followed in relation to academic matters concerning students enrolled for a degree or diploma in a particular faculty; and
    3. be responsible to the Council, through the board of management, for the management of the other activities of the School in accordance with the statutes and regulations.

Deputy Director

  1. On the recommendation of the board of management, the Council must appoint a deputy director of the School.
  2. By virtue of the appointment, the deputy director holds office as deputy head of the department.
  3. The deputy director acts as head of the department when the director of the School is absent or unable to act.

 

Staff

  1. After consultation with the Board and subject to the statutes and regulations, the Council must appoint such professors, readers and teaching and research officers to the School as it considers appropriate.

  1. The Summer School of Business Administration was established by the University in 1955 and amalgamated with the Department of Commerce and Business Administration in 1973 to form the Graduate School of Business Administration which was established by statute as a Department of the University within the faculty of Economics and Commerce. In 1984 the Graduate School of Management was established as a department within the University. On 2 August 1994 the name was changed from Graduate School of Management to Melbourne Business School and references to the School were changed accordingly.
