Regulation 3.3.R1 - Elections to The Committee of Convocation

General Provisions

1. The provisions of sections 1 to 13 inclusive of Regulation 2.1.R1 together with relevant schedules thereto in relation to elections to the Council, apply to elections to the committee of convocation, the necessary changes being made.

Notice of Elections

2. The following special provisions apply for an election by graduates-
   1. The call for nominations under section 1(1)(a) of Regulation 2.1.R1 and the notice of an election under section 3(1) of Regulation 2.1.R1 must be published on University notice boards, the University website, and in two daily newspapers circulated in Melbourne.
   2. Voting papers may be forwarded –
      1. by normal post;
      2. by delivery through the internal mail system of the University;
      3. electronically by email or via a web site’ or
      4. by hand to an elector by an election officer
      to every graduate eligible to vote in a particular election whose name and address appears on the graduate roll maintained under Statute 3.2.

Counting of votes

3. (1) If only one candidate is to be elected, counting of votes must be in accordance with the principles of optional preferential voting.

(2) Where more than one candidate is to be elected, votes must be counted according to the principles of proportional representation as used for the Senate elections in 1999 with the proviso that, because voters do not have to list a preference for all candidates, the quota necessary for election will decrease whenever a vote becomes informal as all preferences on it are for candidates who have been elected or excluded.

(3) A call for nominations under this section may be expressed so as to incorporate the required information for elections taking place at the same time for more than one class of graduates.
