Interpretation

In this regulation, unless the contrary intention appears –
“candidate” means, in respect of a particular faculty group, a person who is a member of the alumni of the University nominated for election to the alumni council to represent that particular faculty group
“faculty group” means, in relation to the election of members of the alumni council, any one of the following groupings of academic units (or predecessors as applicable):
- faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning and Melbourne School of Engineering;
- faculty of Arts and faculty of the VCA and Music;
- faculty of Business and Economics and Melbourne Business School;
- faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences;
- faculties of Science and Veterinary Science, and Melbourne School of Land and Environment; and
- Melbourne Law School and Melbourne Graduate School of Education.

Membership of the alumni council

- Subject to this section 2, Council determines the composition of the alumni council by appointing:
- 16 alumni, including the president of convocation as provided under section 3.1.4(a) of statute 3.1, as voting members; and
- two representatives of the University as non-voting members.
- Subject to section 2(f), at least six of the 16 alumni appointed by Council under section 2(a)(i) must first have been elected by alumni in accordance with section 3.
- Council appoints the remaining members of the alumni council on the recommendation of the vice-chancellor, and so that:
- at least six of such members represent recognised alumni bodies; and
- Council seeks to achieve so far as possible appropriate diversity in age, gender and location of alumni within the membership of the alumni council.
- No member of Council and no member of the academic or professional staff of the University may be a voting member of the alumni council. If any voting member of the alumni council is appointed to Council or becomes a member of the academic or professional staff of the University, their office as a member of the alumni council becomes vacant.
- The period of office for each member of the alumni council is as follows:
- half of the initial elected voting members and half the initial appointed voting members of the alumni council, determined by lot, shall be appointed for three year terms;
- subject to section 2(e)(i), the term of each member of the alumni council shall be two years; and
- subject to section 2(e)(i) and (ii), each year, at least three elected positions and no more than five appointed positions from within the voting members on the alumni council shall fall vacant by effluxion of time.
- Council may fill any casual vacancy on the recommendation of the vice-chancellor.
- A member of the alumni council is eligible to be reappointed by Council at the end of the member’s term of office if the member’s total period in office on the alumni council does not exceed six years of membership, whether consecutive or not.
- The restriction on term of office in section 2(g) does not apply to a member of the alumni council where membership exceeds six years if Council passes a resolution that the person may continue to be a member of the alumni council beyond that period.

Elections

- Annual elections for candidates to be appointed to the alumni council by Council pursuant to section 2(b) must be managed by the University.
- Candidates must be nominated by a member of the alumni of the University.
- All alumni may vote in elections for every faculty group. Each alumnus may cast one vote in respect of each faculty group for which an election is being held.
- Subject to section 3(e), Council must appoint to the alumni council the candidate in receipt of the most votes in respect of one faculty group as the representative of that faculty group.
- Where two or more candidates for one faculty group each receive the equal highest number of votes, Council may determine which candidate to appoint as the representative for that faculty group.
- a person may be elected to represent only one faculty group.

Alumni Council Proceedings

- Subject to statute 3.1 and to this regulation, the alumni council may regulate its own proceedings .
- The alumni council must present an annual report to the alumni body.
