R3.43 - Degree of Doctor of Dental Science

- The faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (“the faculty”) may admit as a candidate for the degree of doctor of Dental Science
- any person who is a graduate in Dental Science of the University; or
- any other graduate of this or another university or tertiary educational institution or a person who holds another qualification, which degree or other qualification is recognised by the faculty pursuant to Statute 11.1.6 as appropriate for the purposes of this regulation;
and in either case is of not less than four years' standing from the time of first qualifying for the degree or other qualification.
- Except as hereinafter provided candidates must have qualified for admission to the degree of master of Dental Science or doctor of Philosophy and must submit a thesis which may consist of published or unpublished work making an original and substantial contribution to some branch of Dental Science. The subject of the thesis must be proposed by the candidate and approved by the faculty.
- In special cases the faculty may permit a candidate to present a thesis without previously qualifying for admission to the degree of master of Dental Science or doctor of Philosophy. On report from the examiners the faculty may in its discretion require the candidate to qualify for such admission, or, if in the opinion of the examiners the thesis is of exceptionally high merit, exempt him or her in whole or in part from the requirement that he or she should so qualify.
- The examiners of any thesis1 may require the candidate to undertake further assessment in the subject to which his or her thesis relates.
- In every appointment of examiners at least one of the appointees must be an external examiner.
- Candidates who have given evidence of research and ability satisfactory to the examiners and who have fulfilled the other prescribed conditions may be admitted to the degree of doctor of Dental Science.
