R3.7 - Degree of Doctor of Letters

  1. A person may be a candidate for the degree of doctor of Letters who -
    1. (i) is a graduate, of at least seven years standing, of the University or of another university which is recognised by the faculty of Arts ("the faculty") pursuant to Statute 11.1.6 as appropriate for the purposes of this regulation; or

      (ii) though not a graduate, has a substantial and sustained record of scholarship which in the opinion of the faculty is satisfactory and adequate for the purposes of this regulation; and
    2. (i) has undertaken or intends to undertake at the University a substantial part of the work associated with his or her candidature; or

      (ii) has such a close connection with the University that in the opinion of the faculty his or her candidature is appropriate; and
    3. has obtained the consent of the faculty.
  2. Every candidate must submit for assessment an original work1, the subject, scope and character of which have been approved by the faculty, together with any other published or unpublished work which the candidate thinks appropriate. The examiners must not certify that a candidate has fulfilled the requirements for the degree unless they are satisfied that the work submitted is effectively presented and makes a substantial, sustained and original contribution to learning.
  3. A candidate must not submit for assessment work in respect of which a degree has been awarded in any university, or, without permission of the faculty, work which has previously been presented for any such degree.
  4. If the principal work submitted by a successful candidate has not been published the degree must not be conferred until it has been published in whole or in part in a form satisfactory to the faculty, unless in special circumstances an exemption is granted by the Council on the recommendation of the faculty.
  5. Candidates who have fulfilled the prescribed conditions may be admitted to the degree of doctor of Letters.

 

1 Three copies of work submitted must be lodged for examiners.
