- On the recommendation of the vice-chancellor, Council may appoint a provost on such terms and conditions as it determines and who, in cooperation with the vice-chancellor to whom the provost reports, is responsible for the academic affairs of the University.
- The provost is the senior academic officer of the University and, during tenure as provost, is also a deputy vice-chancellor.

Duties and powers of the provost

- The provost must:
- coordinate and superintend the academic and related programs and student services across the University in accordance with the policies of the Board and of Council;
- provide leadership to deans so as to foster collaboration and to promote congruence of the activities of faculties and graduate schools with the goals of the University; and
- except where otherwise provided by the vice-chancellor or Council in relation to a specified period, act as vice-chancellor when a vacancy occurs in the office of vice-chancellor or the vice-chancellor is unable to perform the duties of the office by reason of ill health or absence from the University.
