Vice-Chancellor's Fellows

Vice-Chancellor's Fellowships were established in mid 1997 to provide "in residence" status for distinguished public intellectuals to promote their contributions to society in their particular area of expertise. Appointment is usually for one year, or may be taken part-time over several years.

Mr Gillies will use the opportunity to develop a new piece of theatre with political and historical themes in collaboration with Guy Rundle and others, and write a personal memoir about his career in political satire.

He will also assist the development of theatre skills and practice on campus and encourage the development of satirical commentary and performance.

As a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow Professor Garnaut will

  • Undertake research and publish influentially on the topic of Australian international economic and security policy and make progress towards publication of an influential book on governance and economic development; and
  • Be involved in public debate in his areas of expertise (climate change) through contributions to public lectures and other public forums, including the media.

Father Norden will undertake research and publish a book on the topics of human rights, social justice and public advocacy. In addition he will be involved in public debate in his areas of expertise (social justice and human rights) through contributions to workshops, seminars public lectures and other public forums, including the media.

Professor Zillman will use this opportunity to publish a book on the science of climate change and the role of climate science in the policy process. He will also develop the intellectual framework for a better integrated national and international approach to in situ and space-based earth observation and monitoring.
During his time as a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow he will also prepare a monograph on the history, economics, policy context, role, operation and management of National Meteorological, Hydrological and Oceanographic Services as a basis for capacity building in weather, climate, water and general environmental service provision in developing countries.
