922-126 MCD-Introduction to Biblical Hebrew

This subject is available to high-achieving students on a cross-institutional (complementary course) basis for credit towards the Bachelor of Arts. It is taught by the United Faculty of Theology (UFT) and Whitley College (Whitley) as part of the Melbourne College of Divinity. Special entry application and enrolment arrangements apply. This subject is offered as part of a two subject sequence, the second being 922-127 MCD-Biblical Hebrew.

This subject is an introduction to Biblical Hebrew. It covers some essential elements of the grammar of Biblical Hebrew and introduces some basic vocabulary. It introduces students to aspects of translation of Biblical Hebrew as well as the main lexical aids. On completion of the subject students should be able to translate basic nominal and verbal sentences; have mastered about 150 basic words in Biblical Hebrew; and be able to read Hebrew script well.

Written work totalling 4000 words comprising: weekly exercises and tests 50%, and a two hour examination 50% (at the end of the semester).
