Subject Description

In this subject students should acquire practical skills in understanding and expressing basic information (such as personal details, needs, wishes, likes/dislikes) in speech and writing. Relevant aspects of contemporary Greek society and culture are also introduced. The emphasis throughout is on practice at listening, reading, speaking and writing Greek in everyday situations and various audio-visual aids are used for this purpose.

Generic Skills

  • have enhanced their oral-aural and literacy skills in standard Modern Greek and their capacity to function in communities whose culture is encoded in this language, whether in Australia or overseas;

  • have acquired the essential cultural knowledge required for effective communication, the linguistic means to explore Modern Greek culture, and an appropriate understanding of the structure of the language;

  • be trained to communicate in a different linguistic and cultural code which should enhance their mental agility and their awareness of cultural diversity.

Assessment

Weekly assignments and class exercises of 1200 words 40% (due throughout the semester), a 1-hour written test 10% (due mid-semester), a 1-hour written test 20% (due at the end of semester) and a 30-minute oral/aural test 30% (due at the end of semester).
