Subject Description

This is an introduction to the Catalan language and to the culture of that part of Spain in which Catalan is spoken. Regular work with video and audio tapes, written exercises and reading preparation are set. A wide spectrum of audio, video and written materials are available direct from Catalonia which help to reinforce the everyday use of the language. Various aspects of Catalan civilisation are introduced and the problematic coexistence of Catalan alongside Spanish, especially in relation to Barcelona, is explored.

Assessment

Short written compositions 25%, grammar exercises 10%, two oral tests 10%, weekly quizzes 10%, two aural tests 15% and two written tests 30% (due mid-semester and at the end of semester).
