This subject is an introduction to the history of Western Christianity from the late Middle Ages to the present. The social, cultural and political contexts in which Christianity developed will be analysed. Topics will include 16th century Reformation movements, 17th century Puritanism and Pietism, the impact of the Enlightenment and revolution upon the Church, the development of Christianity in America and Australia, and the rise of modern missionary and ecumenical movements.

• demonstrate an awareness of the fundamental skills and approaches used in church history and systematic theology;

• be able to locate and use appropriate resources for church history and systematic theology in the library and on the internet;

• be able to research, document and write an analytical essay on a topic in church history or systematic theology using primary and secondary sources and in an acceptable format;

• begin to develop the skills necessary for theological reflection.

Written work totalling 4000 words, which may include a 1-hour examination equivalent to 1000 words.
